Sympathy Extended By Tipperary Co. Council, On Death Of Duke Of Edinburgh.

Remembering the Thurles association with the British Royal Family, it was fitting, right and indeed our bounden duty that Tipperary County Council should extend the county’s sympathy to the extended members of the British Royal Family, following the passing of 99 year old Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich, (Philip Mountbatten).

The current British Prince Charles and future King (Deo volente), as our regular readers are aware, is a direct descendant of Viscount and Lady Thurles, through their eldest son James, (Duke of Ormond) and his wife Elizabeth Preston, (Baroness Dingwall).

The Duke’s daughter, Elizabeth, married Philip Stanhope, 2nd Earl Chesterfield, and their daughter Elizabeth Stanhope married John Lyon, 4th Earl Strathmore.

Later, in direct line, was the 14th Earl Strathmore, whose daughter, Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon married the future George Winsor, later King George VI; the grandparents of Prince Charles.

Yesterday, the world watched, with millions paying their respects, as Prince Philip was laid to rest, after serving 74 years by the side of Queen Elizabeth II.

Prince Philip was laid to rest in the Royal Vault in St. George’s Chapel, in the grounds of Windsor Castle, following his funeral service yesterday afternoon, held at 3:00pm.
