Revenue officers have seized a quantity of illicit cigarette and tobacco worth an estimated €10,700 here in Co. Tipperary.
The seizures were made following the search of a car by Revenue officers in the Golden area close to Cashel in Co. Tipperary on Wednesday morning last.
The officers are understood to have discovered further contraband cigarettes and tobacco in a follow-up search, carried out under warrant, at the driver’s residence. Revenue officers also seized the car in which the cigarettes were located, as is required by law.
Some 22,800 cigarettes; branded Marlboro; Monte Carlo; Royal Classic; Jim; MG; NZ Gold; and Che, were seized together with 200 grams of tobacco; branded Amber Leaf and Cherry Choice.
In total, the products posed a potential loss to the Irish Exchequer of some €9,100.
A man believed to be in his 50’s was questioned and a file is presently being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
