Plastic here in Thurles, Co. Tipperary; as with every other town in the world, is ubiquitous. It fills our bins, shopping trolleys and households.
It’s hard to imagine life without plastic and yet it’s a relatively recent invention. It wasn’t until the 1960s that plastic began to be mass produced and many of our readers may well remember how life in Ireland functioned before plastic.
Despite its usefulness and convenience, plastic is one of our world’s greatest environmental problems. It now dominates our landfills, rivers and oceans.
Why?
It does not decompose like other materials. Indeed, it is estimated that it can take 450 years for one plastic bottle to decompose in landfill.
In the fascinating “TedEd” talk in the video shown immediately above, [which hopefully you have all watched], scientific research on microbes may help humanity find an effective and more natural way to decompose plastic in our environment.
Whilst this is indeed welcome news, it represents only a small step in the fight against plastic. Ultimately, we need to drastically rethink our relationship with the substance and aim to remove as much plastic as we can from our lives and communities.
As the wise old adage states, “prevention is better than cure”.

It was with a great sadness that we learned of the death, on Saturday 9th July 2022, of Mrs Winifred (Freddie) Keyes (née Ryan), Knocknakilla, Kilcommon, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.
Pre-deceased by her husband Sean; sisters Maura and Rita; brothers Tony and Tom; Mrs Keyes, in her 96th year, passed away peacefully following a short illness, while in the care of staff at University Hospital, Limerick, and surrounded by her loving family.
Her passing is most lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her children, Mary, Eileen, John, Karen and Matthew, brothers Martin and Matt, daughter-in-law Jeanette, sons-in-law Ger and Toufik, grandchildren, sisters-in-law, brother-in- law, nieces and nephews, cousins, extended relatives, neighbours and friends.
Requiescat in Pace.
Funeral Arrangements.
The earthly remains of Mrs Keyes will repose this evening, Monday, July 11th, at J & J McCormack’s Funeral Home, Kilcommon Cross, Thurles, from 5:00pm to 8:00pm.
Her body will be received into the Church of St. Patrick, Kilcommon, Thurles, on Tuesday morning, to arrive for Funeral Mass at 11:30am, followed by interment immediately afterwards in Curreeney Cemetery, Kilcommon, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.
[NB: Due to C-19 virus fears; those attending will continue to observe strict adherence to social distancing, face covering, with no hand shaking.]

This evening, July 10th, at 10:00pm will see the conclusion of the Thurles, Liberty Square, Free Music Festival, 2022.
The festival has remained incident free and a big “Thank You” to the many people involved in its overall organisation.
A massive “Thank You” to the magnificent, performing Tribute Acts, who brought the Thurles audience, such enormous pleasure, over the past two days.
