November 2nd, “All Soul’s Day”

Perhaps it’s being caused by climate change, global warming, or the current mild weather being experience here in Ireland. Either way, it appears that some ghosts, phantom ghouls and wandering souls are reluctant to return to that place of departed spirits, as I experienced and photographed, while passing a local graveyard tonight. [Thank goodness the gate was locked.]

In earlier times people would dread being out late on the eve of November 2nd, “All Soul’s Day” as ghosts were said to be observed in the most isolated of places, especially in rural graveyards.

People would remain at home and would refrain from going out after dark, thus avoiding walking on or indeed with the dead.

So deep was the belief that households would sit around a blazing fire, relating stories about their memories of ancestors, before retiring early to their beds.

However, going early to bed would not take place before leaving the house ready for any visiting dead. The door on this night would remain unlocked in rural areas; while in larger towns and cities a window was left open instead, and for obvious reasons. A big fire was put down before going to bed and hot ashes (Irish -gríosach) were never raked out on that night.

No water could be thrown outside on All Souls’ Day, as they could be accidently throwing it into the faces of invisible wandering soul’s.

If people gave money to a poor man calling to their door on All Souls Day, the householder could expect great luck within the next 12 months.

Death Of Evelyn Morrissey, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

It was with a great sadness that we learned of the death yesterday, Monday 31st October 2022, of Ms Evelyn Morrissey, Killaghy, Mullinahone, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

Sadly, Ms Morrissey passed away suddenly at her place of residence.

Her passing is most deeply regretted by her loving parents Paddy and Liz, sister Marian, brother Gerald, niece Suranne, nephews Dylan, Gavin and Zane, Uncles, Aunts, extended relatives, neighbours and a wide circle of friends.

Requiescat in pace.

Funeral Arrangements.

The earthly remains of Ms Morrissey will repose at her residence in Killaghy, Mullinahone, Thurles, on tomorrow evening, Wednesday November 2nd, from 5:30pm with prayers at 8:00pm.
Requiem Mass will be celebrated on Thursday morning, November 3rd, in St. Michael’s Church, Mullinahone, Thurles, at 11:30am, followed by interment in St. Michaels Cemetery, Killaghy, Mullinahone, Thurles. Co. Tipperary.

Warning To Thurles Motorists & Pedestrians.

Motorists and pedestrians are being warned tonight to take extreme care when traversing the new €500,000 Bowes Corner road upgrade project here in Thurles.

Motorists will find themselves leaving a bright area and entering a darkened area, before, too late experiencing the surface, shown above, which could result in a tyre blowout or broken axle.

It would appear that those contracted to work on the Bowe’s Corner project went off for the Halloween weekend and the picture shown here, above, indicates their lack of dedication and the lack of dedication by Tipperary Co. Council engineers, latter handsomely paid to oversee such project disasters.

Note: No warning signs; no flashing lights and the water levels, in relation to the depth of the potholes, are extremely deceiving.

First €200 Electricity Credit Due Tomorrow, Tuesday November 1st.

The first of three promised €200 electricity credits are expected to be made tomorrow, Tuesday, November 1st, to more than 2.2 million domestic accounts to offset rising energy costs here in the Irish Republic.
This €200 credit will be paid out automatically, and customers are not required to make any application in order to acquire same.

This money will be paid directly to all domestic electricity accounts, including both ‘bill pay’ and ‘pay-as-you-go’ customers.

The payment will appear on bills from the start of November and into December, depending on each household’s electricity supplier and their particular billing cycle.

The second and third €200 payments will be made to cover the January/February and March/April billing periods.

The total package of €600 in energy credits will equate to around 25% of the estimated annual bill for consumed electricity for the vast majority of typical domestic households.

Death Of Baby James Doyle, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

It was with a great sadness that we learned of the death, on Saturday 29th October 2022, of baby James Francis (Jimmy) Doyle, No.7 Brittas, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

Baby James sadly passed away while in the care of staff at the National Maternity Hospital, Holles Street, Dublin.

His passing is most deeply regretted and will be forever missed by his heartbroken parents Delta and Jimmy Doyle, his grandparents Evelyn and James Doyle and Tom and Annie Pauline Conroy, great grandparents Marie and John Stone, Bridget Sweeney and Margaret Doyle, uncles, aunts, cousins and extended relatives.

Funeral Arrangements.

The earthly remains of baby James will repose at his home on Tuesday evening, November 1st, from 4:00pm to 6:00pm.
A funeral cortège, bearing the body of baby James, will be received into the Cathedral of the Assumption, Cathedral Street, Thurles, on Wednesday morning next November 2nd at 10:30am, to further repose for a ‘Mass of the Angels’, at 11:00am, followed by interment immediately afterwards in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Moyne Road, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.
