- EPA announces funding of €14.3m for 33 new research projects to address climate and environmental challenges. This represents a 34 per cent increase in investment from the previous call in 2022.
- EPA funding is building essential research capacity in Ireland with over 40 per cent of lead researcher applicants in 2023 new to the EPA Research Programme.
- The funding covers research in the areas of climate change, the natural environment, the green & circular economy, and the environment & human health.
- Reflecting the need for cross-sectoral research, the EPA is working in partnership with Met Éireann and Geological Survey Ireland to co-fund some of the research.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today announced new funding for Environmental and climate research in Ireland, with funding of €14.3 million awarded for 33 new research projects. This represents a significant increase over previous years and reflects the EPA’s ongoing commitment to funding environmental and climate research. These innovative projects will support the development and implementation of environmental policies in Ireland, as well as building research capacity in strategically important areas.
This funding will support more than 200 research staff across 13 organisations to conduct projects in innovative areas such as:
- how blue light can affect human health and biodiversity.
- societal transformation required to address climate, environmental and social challenges.
- digital twins for coastal areas.
- nature-based solutions for water quality and ecology.
- the circular economy for batteries.
- sustainable tourism.
- air pollution in Irish towns.
Announcing the awards, Ms Laura Burke, (EPA Director General) said: “Scientific research and innovation are playing an increasingly important role in informing how governments and society can respond to the challenges posed by climate change and environmental degradation. The projects announced today will address knowledge gaps, both current and future, to provide robust evidence to support the implementation of effective environmental policies in Ireland.
This EPA funding will also help to build transdisciplinary research capacity and talent in Ireland in key areas relating to sustainability transitions and societal transformations. These specialist skills and expertise are essential to enable Ireland to effectively leverage the full range of environmental, economic and societal opportunities offered by the green transition. I congratulate the successful research teams and look forward to seeing the project outputs making a positive contribution to environmental protection in the years ahead”.
The EPA places a high priority on promoting the uptake of funded research to inform policy and to maximise the impact of research and innovation. Reflecting the need for an integrated, cross-sectoral approach, the EPA is working in partnership with Met Éireann and Geological Survey Ireland to co-fund a number of projects.
Of the successful lead research applicants supported through the call, over 40% had not previously applied for funding to the EPA, broadening the base of the researchers and institutions engaging in research relevant to environmental policy.
University College Cork (UCC) received the highest number of successful research awards in 2023. Professor Mr John Cryan, (UCC Vice President for Research and Innovation) said: “I would like to thank the Environmental Protection Agency for continuing to award talented researchers. This allows them, through scientific research and innovation, to tackle critical environmental, climate, health, and sustainability issues. These awards will further strengthen UCC’s position as a recognised global leader in the field of Sustainability. Aligned to UCC Futures – Sustainability, these projects will enable UCC researchers to support environmental policies in Ireland, address key societal challenges caused by climate change, and help deliver a healthier environment for all”.

It was with great sadness that we learned of the death, on Monday 12th February 2024, of Mr Ned (Edward) Gleeson, Rathdown Park, Greystones, Co. Wicklow and formerly of Ballyheen, Templemore, Co. Tipperary.
Pre-deceased by his beloved wife Margaret (née Fleming); Mr Gleeson passed away peacefully, while in the care of staff at Eyrefield Manor Nursing Home, surrounded by his loving family.
His passing is most deeply regretted and sadly missed by his family; cherished son Jim and daughter Evelyn, dear friend Anne, adored sister Julia, daughter-in-law Jo, son-in-law Nick, grandson Tom, nieces, nephews, extended relatives, neighbours, carers and a large circle of friends.
The earthly remains of Mr Gleeson will be received into the Church of the Holy Rosary, Greystones, Co. Wicklow, after which evening prayer will be recited at 6:00pm, on tomorrow evening, Thursday, February 15th.
Funeral Mass for Mr Gleeson will be celebrated on Friday morning, February 16th at 10:00am, following which he will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife Margaret, in Glenkeen Cemetery, Borrisoleigh, Thurles, Co. Tipperary, arriving at 1:30pm approximately.

Gardaí are seeking your help after a man, understood to be aged in his forties, was hospitalised, following a serious assault on the roadway outside Greenane Drive, in Tipperary town, Co. Tipperary.
The assault is understood to have taken place in the early hours of this morning (at around 2:00am), leaving the victim, in a serious but stable condition in University Hospital Limerick.
Following enquiries by investigating Gardaí, two men have since been arrested and remain currently in Garda custody at Garda stations in County Tipperary; detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
Gardaí are appealing to anyone who was in the vicinity of Greenane Drive, Tipperary town between the hours of 1:30am and 3:00am, and who may have information in relation to the incident, to contact them.
Any person with such information, including road users or pedestrians, and who may have dash or other camera footage, to immediately contact investigating Gardaí at Tipperary Garda Station, Tel. No. 062 80670, the Garda Confidential Line Tel.No. 1800 666 111, or indeed any Garda Station.
The Minister for Justice, Mrs Helen McEntee TD, has today announced the appointment by Government of two new Data Protection Commissioners, namely Dr. Des Hogan and Mr. Dale Sunderland. Their appointments will take effect from February 20th 2024, for a five-year term.
Dr. Des Hogan has been appointed as Chairperson by the Minister.
The Data Protection Commission has grown significantly in size, scope and responsibility over the last decade. Following a review by the Department of Justice into how best to support this growth, the Government decided to appoint two additional Commissioners, who were selected following an open completion run by the Public Appointments Service.
Minister McEntee said: “The Data Protection Commission has played a pioneering role in enforcing the GDPR across Europe as the lead supervisory authority for a large number of technology and internet platform companies with EU headquarters in Ireland.
The two new commissioners will support an effective and well-resourced, highly-skilled regulator. Ireland’s Data Protection Commission has responsibility for a significant body of work. In recent years as GDPR and protection of personal data have moved into mainstream public consciousness, the DPC has seen its workload increase in all areas of the organisation.
Some 85% of the fines issued across Europe last year, including the EU, EEA, and UK, were issued by the DPC on foot of detailed and comprehensive investigations.
This underlines both the DPC’s significant role, and positive record of effective and robust data regulation.
The Government values the DPC’s important and independent role as one of the largest EU data protection authorities and acknowledges its strong track record in carrying out its duties”.
The Government has ensured that the DPC is resourced to carry out its critical and independent role. The Commission received an allocation of €28.1m under Budget 2024, an almost eightfold increase on its previous 2015 allocation of €3.6m.
Minister McEntee also paid tribute to outgoing Data Protection Commissioner Ms Helen Dixon, whose tenure comes to an end on February 19th, 2024, after almost a decade in the post.
Minister McEntee said: “I would like to thank Ms Dixon for the dedication, strength and vision she has shown throughout her time as Data Protection Commissioner.
Under her stewardship, the Data Protection Commission’s size and remit has expanded significantly and is currently staffed with some 222 employees.
Ms Dixon has led the organisation through this expansion and navigated an evolving data protection landscape, following the enactment of the General Data protection Regulation (GDPR) in May 2018.

The vacancy for the third DPC Commissioner will be filled, through a new Public Appointments Service competition, as soon as possible.
