Ireland Wastes Over One Million Meals Each Day.

Ireland generated 750,000 tonnes of food waste in 2022.
Food waste in Ireland has not significantly decreased over the first three years of national reporting.
70% of food waste was generated by businesses and industries across the food supply chain, 30 per cent by households.

New figures released by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today show that over 750,000 tonnes of food waste was generated in Ireland in 2022. There has been no significant change in the amount of food waste generated in the first three years of national statistics reporting, (Namely the years 2020, 2021 and 2022).

Over 70% of food waste was generated by food & drink sector businesses and 30% by households. This is food wasted during production, manufacturing and processing, distribution, at retail level, in restaurants and in our homes.

Mr David Flynn, Director of the EPA’s Office of Environmental Sustainability said: “As a nation, Ireland is wasting too much food – over one million meals a day – which is a significant resource and economic loss. With 70% of food waste generated by food & drink businesses across the supply chain, there is a clear obligation on this sector to focus on preventing food waste. Signing up to the EPA’s Food Waste Charter is a positive statement that your business is serious about taking action to measure and reduce food waste.
Unavoidable food waste should be segregated for recycling. Waste collectors are required to provide an organic waste bin so all businesses should now have a 3-bin system in place.”

Mr Warren Phelan, Programme Manager, EPA Circular Economy Programme said: “Waste collectors are obliged to provide their household customers with a food waste collection service since January 2024. Greater coverage and rollout of the organic waste bin is key to segregating food waste and increasing recycling through composting and anaerobic digestion.
Food waste costs each household an average of €700 per year. Knowing the food you waste is the first step to prevent waste at home and the EPA’s Stop Food Waste programme provides lots of practical information to support householders.”

Death Of Viktoras Klevinskis, Hollyford, Co. Tipperary.

It was with great sadness that we learned of the death, on Monday 24th June 2024, of Mr Viktoras Klevinskis, Hollyford, Co. Tipperary and formerly of Lituania.

Mr Klevinskis sadly passed away suddenly at his place of residence.

His passing is most deeply regretted, sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his sorrowing wife and family, friends and colleagues at O’Gradys Sawmills, Hollyford.

The remains of Mr Klevinskis will repose at Whites Funeral Home, Main Street, Cappawhite, Co. Tipperary this afternoon, Thursday, June 27th, from 2:00pm until 3:00pm, followed by removal to Shannon Crematorium, Illaunmanagh, Shannon, Co. Clare, (V14 PV30) for a Cremation Service at 4:00pm.

Death Of Mary Sheedy, formerly Templemore, Co. Tipperary.

It was with great sadness that we learned of the death, on Monday 24th June 2024, of Ms Mary Sheedy, Parcnagowan, Kilkenny City, Co. Kilkenny and formerly of Kiltillane, Templemore, Co. Tipperary.

Ms Sheedy passed away peacefully.

Her passing is most deeply regretted, sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her sorrowing family; son Andy daughter Lily (Boyd), parents Tim and Tess, brothers John, Tony, Tadhg, Senan and Owen, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews, extended relatives, neighbours, friends and staff and patients at Kilkenny Chiropractic Clinic.

The earthly remains of Ms Sheedy will repose at Johnston’s Funeral Home, John’s Green, Kilkenny City (R95 XE00) on Friday afternoon, June 28th, from 5:00pm until 7:00pm same evening, with Rosary and Vigil Prayers at 6:30pm.
Her remains will be received into the Church of St. Patrick, Walkinslough, Kilkenny, City (R95 VX96) to further repose for Requiem Mass on Saturday morning at 11:00am, followed by cremation afterwards in the Garden Chapel at Mount Jerome Crematorium, 158 Harold’s Cross Rd, Harold’s Cross, Dublin, (D6W HY98) for a Cremation Service at 3:00pm.

RTÉ Broadcaster Tommie Gorman Dies Aged 68.

It was with shock and sadness that RTÉ viewers, here in Co. Tipperary, learned of the death of TV broadcaster Mr Tommie Gorman, who passed away peacefully yesterday, Tuesday, June 25th.

The Sligo native was born in 1956, and educated in Summerhill College, before attending at the College of Journalism, in Rathmines, Dublin. He spent three years working in the Ballina-based Western Journal, before joining RTÉ in 1980 as north-west news correspondent. He continued to work for RTÉ News for some 40 years in a variety of roles including Europe editor, before moving to Belfast, back in 2001, to become the station’s northern editor.

A journalist of outstanding integrity, trusted, and a deeply insightful public service broadcaster and commentator; Mr Gorman had battled a rare form of cancer, (neuroendocrine tumours), first identified by chance in January of 1994. He was aged just 37 at the time of his diagnosis and was working as RTÉ’s Brussels-based Europe correspondent.

Mr Gorman retired from RTÉ in April 2021 and was awarded the title of ‘European of the Year’ that same year for his work on both radio and television reports on EU institutions. The award was presented to him in Dublin by then President of Ireland Mrs Mary McAleese.
Earlier, in October 2009 he had been given an honorary master’s degree by NUI Galway.

Mr Gorman is survived by his wife Ceara (Roche) and their two children Moya and Joe.

Sinn Féin In Breach Of Legislation Governing Election Posters In Thurles.

Yet one other giant election poster has been located in Thurles town, Co. Tipperary, which should be recognised immediately as being currently in breach of the legislation governing election posters.

The Sinn Féin (better known as ‘The Angry Party’) poster advertises the availability of the now newly elected EU candidate Ms Kathleen Function, formerly Teachta Dála for Carlow–Kilkenny and wife of David Cullinane T.D of “Up the Republic, Up the ‘Ra and Tiocfaidh ár lá” fame, latter phrase understood to support the activities of the Provisional IRA.

The above poster photographed today appears to have broken at least 3 rules:
(1). Legislation requires that every notice, bill, poster or similar document, having reference to a referendum or Dáil, Local or European Parliament election or distributed for the purpose of furthering the candidature of any candidate at an election, must have printed on its face the name and address of the printer. The omission of the name and address of the printer is an offence. Where a person is guilty of an offence, such person shall be liable on summary conviction to a fine or, at the discretion of the court, to imprisonment for a period not exceeding three months or to both such a fine and such imprisonment.
(2). Posters should be erected at a minimum height of 2.3 metres above any area to which pedestrians have access.
(3). Any election/referendum posters in place after the stipulated time-frame are deemed to be in breach of the legislation and are subject to an on-the-spot litter fine of €150. The rules were made quite clear, prior to the election date; ‘All posters must be removed by “Friday 14th June 2024 (midnight)”. If posters are in place outside of this date, fines will be issued by the Council at the rate of €150 per poster.

Since this poster shown above also advertises the availability of now failed candidate, Senator Mr Paul Gavan, should the fine now be doubled?
