Ursuline Convent Thurles Pupil “honoured” by Best Actress Oscar Nomination.

Former Ursuline Convent Thurles pupil Ms Jessie Buckley “honoured” by Best Actress Oscar nomination for film ‘Hamnet’.

Former Ursuline Convent Thurles, pupil Ms Jessie Buckley has said she is “honoured” after receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for her role in Hamnet.

The 36-year-old Killarney native is nominated for her portrayal of Agnes Hathaway; historically known as Anne Hathaway, in the film adaptation of Ms Maggie O’Farrell’s award-winning novel, which centres on the Shakespeare family and the death of their young son.

Ms Buckley also paid tribute to her co-star Mr Paul Mescal, who plays William Shakespeare in the film, after he missed out on a supporting actor nomination, when nominations were announced on today. Ms Buckley said she considers Mescal “a partner for life” and credited his artistry as central to what they created on screen.

Speaking to US media following the announcement, Ms Buckley said she was “proud and honoured” to be nominated alongside “extraordinary women”, adding that she was delighted that ‘Hamnet’ was recognised.

Ms Buckley is widely viewed as a leading contender this awards season, having already collected major honours including the Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice awards for her role.

The Oscars ceremony takes place on March 15th, 2026 in Los Angeles, so lets keep our fingers crossed.

Death Of Kathleen Hennessy, Late Of Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

It was with great sadness that we learned of the death, yesterday Wednesday 21st January 2026 of
Mrs Kathleen Hennessy (née Delahunty), Late of Findlater Bar, 80 Upper Dorset St., Dublin; Galmoy, Co. Kilkenny and Ballingarry (South Riding), Thurles, Co.Tipperary.

Pre-deceased by her husband Seán and parents Joe and Elizabeth; Mrs Hennessy passed away peacefully while in her daughter’s home in Ballintaggart, Co. Tipperary, surrounded by her loving family.

Her passing is most deeply regretted, sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her sorrowing family; loving sons Joe and Shay, daughter Tríona (Hayes), sisters Eilis (Walsh), Moira (Corcoran), and brothers Séamus and Eamon, son-in-law Thomas, Shay’s partner Ann, grandchildren Clodagh, Conor and Brian (Hayes), Shauna (Hennessy), sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended relatives, neighbours and a large circle of friends.

The earthly remains of Mrs Hennessy will repose at Ronan’s Funeral Home, Ballingarry (SR), Thurles, Co. Tipperary, (Eircode E41 CK88), this evening Thursday, January 22nd, from 5:00pm with Vigil Prayers and Rosary at 7:00pm, before being received into the Church of the Assumption, Ballingarry, Thurles (Eircode E41 X523).
Funeral Mass for Mrs Hennessy will be offered on Friday morning January 23rd, at 11:30am, followed by interment, immediately afterwards, in St Lachtain’s Cemetery, Freshford, Co. Kilkenny.

Pre-deceased by her husband Loughlin (Lottie), parents Peter and Mary, brothers Michael and Peter; the passing of Mrs Doran is most deeply regretted, sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her sorrowing family; loving daughters Margaret and Mary, sons John and Peter, grandchildren, sons-in-law Freek and Conal, daughter-in-law Sinead, sisters-in-law May and Kathleen, brother-in-law Paddy, nieces, nephews, extended relatives, neighbours and friends.

Her remains will be received into the Church of St Kevin’s Church, Littleton, Thurles, (Eircode E41 HD90) on Saturday morning, January 24th, at 10:30am to further repose for Requiem Mass at 11:00am, followed by interment, immediately afterwards, in St Mary’s Old Cemetery, Holycross, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.
