Thurles St Patrick’s Day Parade 2025 – Part 1

An large crowd once again put in an appearance at this years Thurles St Patrick’s Day parade, held yesterday afternoon, Monday March 17th. Despite the overcast sky and low temperatures, few locals were deterred from attending to view the event, as it passed through the town centre.

Amongst those in attendance were people from the Republic of the Philippines, Czech Republic, Ukraine, England, Brazil, South Africa, China, Poland, Italy and Sweden, who joined the very large number of local residents.

Onlookers packed Thurles streets, from Friar Street west, through the town centre and unto Barry’s Bridge; same extremely impressed by the colours of floats; the marching groups representing numerous clubs and societies; the bands and in particular the individual stilt walkers from Cloughjordan, North Tipperary who took part for the first time.

A huge “Thank You” to the work undertaken by Mr John Kenehan and his committee, and to the many individuals in reflective jackets and the Gardaí, who ensured the health and safety of the public in attendance and controlled the traffic.

Death Of Paddy Moylan, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

It was with great sadness that we learned of the death, today Monday 17th March 2025, of Mr Paddy Moylan, Corner House, Littleton, Thurles, Co. Tipperary and formerly of Rathcabbin, Birr, Co. Offaly.

Pre-deceased by his mother Margaret (Gretta Molloy), Gurteen, Rathcabbin, Roscrea, Co. Tipperary; Mr Moylan passed away peacefully, while in the care of staff at Padre Pio Nursing Home, Holycross, Thurles.

His passing is most deeply regretted, sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his sorrowing family; Maura, Mary, Thomas and Kathleen (Ryan).

Funeral Arrangements.

The earthly remains of Mr Moylan will be received into the Church of Our Lady and Saint Kevin, Littleton, Thurles, to repose for Requiem Mass at 11:30am on Wednesday morning, March 19th, followed by interment, immediately afterwards, in the adjoining graveyard.

The extended Moylan family wish to express their appreciation for your understanding at this difficult time.

Death Of Nuala Loftus, Formerly Of Tipperary.

It was with great sadness that we learned of the death, yesterday Sunday 16th March 2025, of Mrs Nuala Loftus (née Lally), Foxrock, Dublin 18, Templemore, Tipperary and formerly of Athlone, Co. Westmeath, Templemore Co. Tipperary and Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

Pre-deceased by her husband Dermot, parents Martin and Delia, her sisters Trudi, Joan and Breda, brothers Pat, Tom and Martin; Mrs Loftus passed away peacefully at her place of ordinary residence while in the warm embrace of her loving family.

Her passing is most deeply regretted, sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her sorrowing family; daughters Claire, Sinéad and Gráinne, sons Paul and Conor, grandchildren Helen, Ellie, Brian, Liam, Clara, Eoin, Josephine, Colm, Rory and Sarah, sons-in-law Ben and John, daughter-in-law Jen, sisters-in-law Peig (Lally) and Áine (Parkinson), brothers-in-law Tomás (Australia) and Fr Mel [Order of Servants of Mary OSM] (South Africa), nieces, nephews, extended relatives, neighbours and many friends.

Funeral Arrangements.

The earthly remains of Mrs Loftus will repose at her residence in Foxrock on Wednesday afternoon, March 19th, from 5:00pm until 7:00pm same evening.
Her remains will be received into the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, Kill Lane, Deansgrange, Dublin 18, to further repose for Requiem Mass on Thursday morning, March 20th, at 9:45am, followed by interment in Deansgrange Cemetery, 2 Deansgrange Road, Deansgrange, Co. Dublin.

Thurles CBS Triumph In Croke Park Thriller.

On a bitterly cold St Patrick’s Day, Thurles CBS produced an amazing comeback in the final 20 mins to overcome Presentation College Athenry in the All Ireland Colleges Senior Hurling final to win the Croke Cup and warm the hearts of their followers.

Trailing by 8 points, after Athenry scored a crucial 2nd goal in the 40th minute of the match, the Thurles boys regrouped and diligently set about chipping away at their Galway opponents lead. Remarkably Thurles CBS out scored their opponents by 12 points to 3 in the last twenty minutes.

Thurles CBS started the match very strongly and were dominating all over the field and led by 6 points to 1 point after 14 minutes. This prompted some changes and an early substitution by Athenry who managed to draw level by half time, after an opportunistic free by Aaron Niland, was deflected to the net against the run of play.

Thurles started the 2nd half very positively with an excellent Kieran Rossiter score – the Durlas Og player would end up with 4 points from play and a deserved player of the match accolade. However with Athenry gaining superiority in the middle sector and their forward line led by the rampaging Jason Rabbitte, Athenry went into a deserved 2-14 to 0-12 lead, with twenty minutes to go.

However, in a testament to the character of the Thurles CBS panel, led by manager Niall Cahill of Urlingford Emeralds, there was no panic and Thurles CBS fought for every ball, and set about eating into the Athenry lead. Hard running, dominant defending and excellent stickwork were the keys to the fightback with finishes from Rossiter, Cillian Minogue, the imperious Euan Murray and substitute James Butler, adding to the free taking of Cormac Fitzpatrick and the all round workrate of every single player in the Blue and Gold of Thurles CBS.

The winning score came from a free by Cormac Fitzpatrick after Kieran Rossiter was tripped bearing down on goal. The final whistle brought scenes of jubilation from the travelling Thurles support. Holycross-Ballycahill’s Robbie Ryan had the honour of lifting the Croke Cup after his hardworking display on the field, and he delivered a passionate and rousing speech, thanking all those who helped this special group of young men in their journey to Dr. Harty Cup and Croke Cup successes.

Death Of George Richardson, Formerly Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

It was with great sadness that we learned of the death, yesterday Sunday 16th March 2025, of Mr George Richardson, Baile Liam, Spiddal, Co. Galway, and formerly of Killenaule, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

Pre-deceased by his wife Diane, parents George and Mary and sister Ann (Carr); Mr Richardson passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family.

His passing is most deeply regretted, sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his sorrowing family; brothers Michael (Oranmore), John (Moycullen), Ger (Luton), Paul (Cork), Walter (na hAille, Inverin) sisters Catherine (London), Mary (Barna), brothers-in law Sean and John, sisters-in law Bernie, Anne, Noreen and Siobhán, nieces, nephews, extended relatives, neighbours former work colleagues at Galway Crystal and many friends.

The earthly remains of Mr Richardson will repose on Tuesday afternoon, March 18th, from 5:00pm until 7:00pm at Naughton’s funeral home, Inverin, Co Galway (H91 AF40).
His remains will be received into Cille Einde Church, Spiddal, to further repose for Requiem Mass on Wednesday morning at 10:30am, followed by interment, immediately afterwards, in Crosscannon Cemetery, Killenaule, Thurles, Co Tipperary (E41 F597).
