Aspartame: Let’s Take Action To Have It Banned From Our Food.

Today, Yuka* are launching a major European petition to demand the ban of Aspartame [E number E 951] in our food, alongside the French League Against Cancer* and the NGO Foodwatch*.

* Yuka is a 100% independent mobile Phone App that analyses the impact of food and cosmetic products on health. By scanning the barcode of a product, the application allows you to access the details of the product’s composition and in return indicates a color-coded rating ranging from green to red. The app now has 65 million users in 12 different countries. The aim is to help consumers make more conscious choices, but also to encourage manufacturers to improve the composition of their products.

Why take action?

Aspartame is an artificial sweetener used to replace sugar in many low-calorie or sugar-free products. It has been classified as possibly carcinogenic to humans by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.
It has also been linked to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
Several studies show that it has no positive effect on weight and may even contribute to long-term weight gain.

Given these unacceptable risks, it’s time to take action.

Death Of Bridie Carew, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

It was with great sadness that we learned of the death, today Thursday 6th February 2025, of Mrs Bridget (Bridie) Carew (née Fogarty), [Also known as Bridie Carey], Coolnamona, Drombane, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

Pre-deceased by her husband Milo, brothers and sisters John and Ann (in infancy), Mai, Martin, Dan and Mike; Mrs Carew passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, while in the care of staff at the Palliative Care, Unit B, Community Hospital of the Assumption, Castlemeadows, Gortataggart, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

Her passing is most deeply regretted, sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her sorrowing family; daughter Mairead (Murray), sons Pat, Jerry and Donal, son-in-law Andy, daughters-in-law Marita, Lucy and Louise, grandchildren Marie, James, Cliodhna, Adam, Mark, Ella, Emma, Megan, Dean, Nicole and Amy, great grandchildren John, Milo and Ruth, Margaret Hickey, sister Kathleen Hayes (Carhue, Annacarthy), brothers Jimmy (Portlaoise), Paddy (Portarlington), sisters-in-law Mary and Maura (Manchester) nephews, nieces extended relatives, kind neighbours and many friends.

Funeral Arrangements.

The earthly remains of Mrs Carew will repose at O’Dwyer’s Funeral Home, Cappanaleigh, Upperchurch, Co. Tipperary, (E41 FN34) on Saturday afternoon, February 8th, from 5:00pm until 7:30pm, followed by removal to the Church of St Mary, Drombane Thurles, same evening.
Requiem Mass for Mrs Carew will be celebrated on Sunday afternoon at 1:00pm, followed by interment, immediately afterwards, in Upperchurch Cemetery, Crossroads, Cappanaleigh, Upperchurch, Co. Tipperary.

Death Of Sylvia Cooke, Formerly Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

It was with great sadness that we learned of the death, yesterday Tuesday 4th February 2025, of Mrs Sylvia Cooke (née Whiteford), Oakfield, Boherard, Ballacolla, Co. Laois and formerly of Newpark, The Commons, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

Mrs Cooke passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, while in the care of staff at the Sacred Heart Nursing Home, Crosspatrick, Co. Kilkenny.

Her passing is most deeply regretted, sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her sorrowing family; husband (of 62 years) Tom, daughter Sharon (Handcock), son-in-law Alan, adored grandchildren Claire, Ross and Kyle, brothers, sisters, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended relatives, neighbours and a wide circle of friends.

A Funeral service will take place on Friday afternoon, February 7th at 1:00pm at Kilcooley Parish Church (C of I), Kilcooley Abbey, Thurles, Co. Tipperary (Eircode E41 YY97), followed by interment, immediately afterwards, in St. Canice’s Church graveyard, Ashbrook, Aghaboe, Co. Laois (Eircode R32 HX92).

Thurles Plans For St Patrick’s Day Parade 2025 Are Taking Shape.

Mr John Kenehan, (Chairperson Thurles St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee) Reports:

The Thurles Saint Patrick’s Day Parade will take place on Monday 17th March 2025, and will leave from
Abbey Road at 2:15pm sharp.
The main sponsors of the parade are Tipperary County Council, the Thurles Chamber of Commerce and as in previous years local Businesses.
The Thurles St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee are once again seeking your support by sponsoring this event, donating funds towards organising the Parade.

The success of the Parade over the years is due to this generous sponsorship and the participation by local businesses, clubs, schools, residents’ associations and other organisations. The theme of the 2025 Parade is “Mythical Ireland, in the time of Saint Patrick”; Or “A theme of your personal choice”.
