2025 Cheltenham Festival Race Renamed To Honour Late Jockey Michael O’Sullivan.

The Jockey Club have confirmed that the opening race of the 2025 Cheltenham Festival will be renamed to honour the recently deceased jockey Mr Michael O’Sullivan, latter who sadly died at the age of just 24 years, having sustained injuries in a fall at Thurles Racecourse, in Co. Tipperary, last month

O’Sullivan’s mount ‘Wee Charlie‘ was one of three fallers at the final fence of a February 6th race at Thurles Racecourse and Mr Michael O’Sullivan, despite receiving urgent medical attention, sadly died of his injuries some 10 days later.

Mr O’Sullivan rode 95 winners in Ireland and Britain, including the ‘Supreme Novices’ Hurdle’, which was the opening race of the 2023 Cheltenham Festival.

Renaming the race that marked the pinnacle of his career is seen as a fitting tribute to Mr O’Sullivan’s dedication, skill and indeed his overall passion for the sport of horse racing.

Death of J.J. Lyons, Formerly Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

It was with great sadness that we learned of the death, on Sunday 23rd February 2025, of Mr John Joseph (J.J.) Lyons, Clinton, Massachusetts and formerly Drangan, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

Pre-deceased by his beloved parents Maurice and Kathleen and his sister Helen; Mr Lyons, sadly, passed away unexpectedly.

His passing is most deeply regretted, sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his sorrowing family; siblings Catherine (McCormack), Maurice, Marie (Moloney), Rita (O’Connor), Philip, Bernadette (Fitzgerald), Geraldine (Butler), Josephine (Meagher), Paul and Noel, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, god children, nieces, nephews, extended relatives, neighbours and many dear friends.

Requiescat in Pace.

Funeral Arrangements.

The earthly remains of Mr Lyons will be received into the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Drangan, Thurles on Wednesday morning next, March 5th, at 10:45am, to repose for Requiem Mass at 11:00am, followed by interment, immediately afterwards, in the in the adjoining graveyard.
