Máire Hoctor Fianna Fáil’s Choice In North Tipperary

Máire Hoctor

Former Fianna Fáil Minister of State Máire Hoctor, last night came through a major threat to her political future, when she survived a strong challenge, at her local selection convention.

While some observers had predicted defeat for the sitting TD,  prior to the selection convention, with her main stumbling block seen as County Councillor Micheal Smith (jnr), latter the son of former Cabinet Minister Michael Smith.

Fianna Fáil had already decided to run just one candidate in the constituency for the general election and successfully outmanoeuvred Micheal Smith by a total of 176 votes to 131 at the convention, which was held here in the Ragg, Inch, Thurles

Councillor John Hogan, also a candidate, informed the convention of his intention to withdraw from the race, at the outset of  the delegate meeting. This move caused some surprise, as previously he had came close to defeating Máire Hoctor for a nomination, prior to the 2007 general election convention. However, rumours of dirty tricks in the race for power, within FF’s party grass roots, are believed to have been responsible for the ‘straight talking’ Councillor Hogan’s decision to withdraw his nomination. Untrue representation made to local newspapers in the North Tipperary/South Offaly constituency, prior to the election convention, which claimed that Councillor Hogan had indicated that he no longer wished to be considered by Fianna Fáil’s delegates, may have lead to his decision to withdraw.

While many of the FF grass roots would have welcomed a change in candidates, many delegates felt, that a change at this time might have given considerable advantage to Labour MEP Alan Kelly, who will now run as a candidate in the constituency and who is understood by many to fancy himself greatly as a possible future leader of the Irish Labour Party.

Following the Convention M/S Hoctor stated that Fianna Fáil members must now inform the constituency that both Labour and Fine Gael “are not ready for Government and that Fianna Fáil have not gone away or died.

Máire Hoctor became a TD first in 2002 when she successfully ran, joining Michael Smith (Snr) on the FF ticket. She served as Minister of State for older people, but was sacked in March 2009, when Brian Cowen reduced the number of junior ministries. She is one of the earliest FF critic of Brian Cowen’s performance, accusing  the Taoiseach last year of failing to communicate with her. Indeed M/S Hoctor grew increasingly unset with the way in which Michael Lowry TD was being allowed to wheel and deal with her party leader and was able to claim credit, in advance, for a series of capital projects in Ms Hoctor’s own constituency area, before she was even aware of any progress being made.

A contingent of ‘die hard’ FF party supporters, packed into the venue for last night’s selection event, with some 306 members entitled to vote. In the past Fianna Fáil has held two out of three seats in Tipperary North, with Mr Smith (Snr) losing his seat in the 2007 election.

Last night was councillor Michael Smith ( jnr) first attempt at an election nomination, while John Hogan, a county councillor for 11 years, had unsuccessfully sought a Dáil nomination in 2007.

With strong rumours of several previously strong businesses about to announce their intentions to close, within the town of Thurles in the coming weeks, Fianna Fáil support in the area is expected to be even further minimized come election time.

Many disillusioned local voters claim that there is now no real great leadership choice for them in the North Tipperary/South Offaly constituency and there is no one new who is prepared to come forward in time to challenge a seat in the next General Election.

Tipperary Native Trevor Hogan Forced To Retire

Leinster’s Rugby second-row Trevor Hogan has been forced to retire from the game because of a knee injury.

The 31-year-old Tipperary native, who was capped four times for Ireland over a seven-year professional career, has finally had to give up, following medical advice.

Trevor, who attended Nenagh CBS and Dublin City University, played with Nenagh Ormond, Dublin University and Blackrock College RFC before joining Shannon RFC in 2002, whom, the latter, he helped to victory in the All-Ireland League.

Trevor made his first start for Munster in 2003, where he went on to win 57 caps, 5 in the Heineken Cup. While at Munster, he won his first Irish cap in 2005 against Japan during the Lions Tour.

He since went on to win 3 caps for the National side, to win 23 caps, including 7 Heineken cup caps, scoring 2 tries in the process.

He played for Munster until 2006, before joining Leinster in the 2006 season, and was part of the squad which won the Magner’s League in 2007-08 and the Heineken Cup the following year.

Injury severely hampered his involvement with Leinster this season, and his last game was against Dragons in November last. In all, he has made fifty nine appearances for the province, on top of fifty seven appearances for Munster

He has cited his decision to retire from rugby, at all levels, on forced medical grounds, caused by persistent knee injuries over the last number of years.

End Of An Era For MySpace?

Myspace

The social networking hub known as Myspace, previously MySpace, used by many in Tipperary to promote the entertainment industry, have recently announced it will cut possibly half of its global workforce, as part of it’s restructuring efforts.

Up to six hundred Myspace employees worldwide will soon be looking for work, as the site continues to redefine itself from a social network site to an entertainment content site with added social networking features. Myspace’s recently announced layoffs already follow two previous rounds of job cuts which it implimented in 2009, reducing it’s then workforce by 30%.

Myspace, which sought to partially retreat from it’s once mighty social network to an entertainment content site, has seen its Web traffic numbers drop dramatically in the recent past.

The parent company News Corp. and it’s division, which includes Myspace posted a $156 million loss for the quarter ending September 2010.

News Corp. may now be looking to sell this site which it purchased for $580 million in 2005, and one potential buyer, according to rumour, just may be Yahoo!, best known for its web portal, search engine (Yahoo! Search), Yahoo! Directory, Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! News, advertising, online mapping (Yahoo! Maps), video sharing (Yahoo! Video), and social media websites and services..

Myspace was overtaken Internationally by its main competitor, Facebook, in April 2008, based on monthly unique visitors.

Last August, Myspace launched a service that allowed you to push your Myspace activity into Facebook. This was followed by a new product called MySpace Mashup with Facebook that let you pull in your likes and interests from Facebook, to obtain personalized entertainment recommendations onto Myspace. This move incorporated Myspace into Facebook’s universal login platform, and many critics saw this move as Myspace formally bowing down to its more popular and ever increasing social networking rival.

The big question currently being debated regarding Myspace is whether it can recover or if any new potential owner can revive it’s ailing social networking hub, through into 2011.

Noel Coonan Confirms Thurles’s New Ambulance Base

Solid confirmation has been received from the Health Service Executive that approval has been granted for the construction of Thurles’s new Ambulance Base on the grounds of the Hospital of the Assumption, with the project to progress to the procurement and tendering phase. Local Fine Gael TD Deputy Noel Coonan who confirmed the news, was also informed that construction work has been included in the HSE Capital Plan for 2011.

Deputy Coonan commented: “I have made numerous representations to the Health Minister pushing for the advancement of this project and last Monday I received a letter of confirmation from the National Ambulance Service assuring me that the long-awaited facility is to proceed and construction work has been included in the HSE Capital Plan 2011.
Approval was given in December 2010 for construction to commence and this is very welcome news, albeit at a late stage. The new ambulance base should have been provided long ago and we’re still at a loss as to why it wasn’t constructed when the Hospital of the Assumption was built. Since then, however the provision of the base has been a priority.
I’m hopeful that now the new amenity will proceed without any further hiccups. The ambulance crew working in Thurles are entitled to top class facilities; especially with the pressure they are under and the vital service they provide.

The confirmation letter, addressed to Deputy Coonan from the Administrator at the HSE’s National Ambulance Service section, also said that overall it is expected that the procurement, tendering and construction will take approximately 13 months to fully complete.

The project will incorporates an ambulance base, covered ambulance parking bay, staff car park and dedicated entrance/exit adjacent to the Hospital of the Assumption.

The Fine Gael CAP Spokesperson concluded by saying that he will continue to lobby Health Minister Mary Harney on the behalf of North Tipperary residents to ensure the project comes to fruition as soon as possible.
