Death Of Gretta Johnson, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

It was with the deepest regret that we learned of the death, yesterday Friday 4th June 2021, of Mrs Gretta Johnson (née O’Connor), Laffansbridge, Killenaule, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

Pre-deceased by her husband Tom; Mrs Johnson passed away peacefully, while in the care of staff at St. Vincent’s Private Hospital, Dublin.

Her passing is most deeply regretted by her son Sean, daughter Fiona, son-in-law Michael, daughter-in-law Jenny, grandchildren Aoife, Eoín, Conor, Liam and Aedan, brother Sean, sister Cassie (O’Connor), sister-in-law Eileen, brother-in-law Sean, aunt Berna, nieces, nephews, extended relatives, neighbours and friends.

Funeral Arrangements.

The earthly remains of Mrs Johnson will repose at her place of residence on Monday evening, June 7th, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, before being received into St. Mary’s Church, Bailey Street, Killenaule, Thurles on Tuesday morning, June 8th, at 11:15am to further repose for Requiem Mass at 11:30am.
Interment will follow immediately afterwards in Crosscannon Cemetery, Killenaule, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

[NB: Due to National Public Health Guidelines, regarding C-19 virus restrictions; those attending (limited to 50 mourners), will continue to observe strict adherence to social distancing and face covering.]

Covid-19 Updates: Sat. 5th June 2021 – 416 New Virus Cases.

The Department of Health this evening has confirmed there have been 416 new additional virus cases reported here within the Irish Republic; with same case numbers subject to future data validation.

There are 74 people with Covid-19 remaining in hospital today in the Republic of Ireland, and of that number 29 are in ICU’s.

Gardaí have appealed to people this holiday weekend period to demonstrate responsibility while socialising outdoors.

In Northern Ireland, the Department of Health has confirmed 95 new cases of the disease today.
Meanwhile, Northern Ireland’s Health Agency has also asked asymptomatic people in selected areas of Kilkeel, Co Down, to get tested for Covid-19; this follows a small number of suspected cases of the Delta (India) variant, having been identified.

The total worldwide number of virus cases identified up to 4.30pm this evening, now stands at well over 172.66 million confirmed cases, with global deaths at well over 3.71 million.

Drugs Valued €124,500 Seized In Dundrum, Co. Tipperary.

Gardaí have arrested a male aged in his 20’s and seized cannabis herb, cocaine and tablets valued at 124,500 euros, following a search in Tipperary, yesterday.

Gardaí from Tipperary Drugs Unit and Tipperary District, together with the Cork Dog Unit and Customs carried out a search in the Dundrum area of the county shortly after 11:00am.

This search resulted in the seizure of cannabis estimated to be worth 60,000 euros, cocaine worth 24,500 euros and tablets valued at 40,000 euros.

A number of mobile phones; paraphernalia associated with the distribution/supply of drugs; together with a sum of cash were also seized.

The man arrested in connection with the search was taken to Tipperary Garda Station where he is currently being held.

October 1st, Announced As “Establishment Day” For TUS: Midlands Midwest.

October 1st, 2021 has been announced as the first day of the new Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest.

From the first day in October, Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT) and Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT) will cease to exist, and more than 15,000 students and 1,200 staff across the Midlands and Midwest will be teaching, learning and researching at the newly designated TUS: Midlands Midwest.

On this day also, four towns will become university towns for the first time, as the new TU will include campuses in Thurles and Clonmel, Co. Tipperary; Athlone, Co, Westmeath; Ennis, Co. Clare, as well as the two campuses in Limerick.

The recruitment of a President for Ireland’s first cross-regional university has also begun, with the application process now open to suitably qualified persons.

The inaugural president will be charged with leading transformational change across adjacent regions, linked by the River Shannon.

These significant steps on the road to Ireland’s third technological university were welcomed by both the Chair of AIT Governing Body Mr Liam Rattigan and the Chair of LIT Governing Body Mr Tony Brazil.

Mr Brazil said, “October 1, 2021 will not only be a significant day in the history of Irish education, but the beginning of what is potentially a new era in investment and development in the regions. TUS: Midlands Midwest will have the capacity to open up third level, active learning, to regions and a people previously underserved. It will further expand the capacity of research and training that will not only support indigenous and multi-national companies already in the Midlands and Midwest, but will encourage further investment and development outside of Dublin. Friday, October 1, 2021 is not just the first day of the month, but the first day of a brighter future for the regions.”

Meanwhile, Mr Rattigan said, “The role of the inaugural president of TUS: Midlands Midwest cannot be under estimated and their leadership essential to the development of the TU. We are seeking an inspiring and strategic leader, with a proven track record of achievement at an appropriately senior level in higher education, business and enterprise, or the public sector. They will be required to have highly developed leadership, organisational and communication skills combined with the strategic capability, vision and drive to shape the future of Ireland’s newest technological university.”

Death Of Noreen Ferncombe, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

It is with the deepest regret that we learned of the death, today Friday 4th June 2021, of Mrs Noreen Ferncombe (née Dunne), No 9 Glenreigh, Holycross, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

Pre-deceased by her parents Walter and Mary and her brother Walter; the passing of Mrs Ferncombe is most deeply regretted by her loving husband John, sons Michael, John and Dinny, daughter Marie, 10 grandchildren, son-in-law Seán, daughters-in-law Martina and Valerie, Marie’s partner Peter, Dinny’s partner Emma, brothers Dinny, Martin, John and Paudie, sister Bridget, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, extended relatives, neighbours and a wide circle of friends.

The funeral cortège, bearing her earthly remains, will be received into the Medieval Monastry Church at Holycross, Thurles, on Monday morning, June 7th, at 11:00am, to further repose for Requiem Mass at 11:30am.
Interment will take place immediately afterwards in the adjoining graveyard.
