Death Of Maura Ryan, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

It was with the deepest regret that we learned of the death, yesterday Tuesday 20th July 2021, of Mrs Maura Ryan (née Ryan ‘Stephens’), Castlefogarty, Ballycahill, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

Pre-deceased by her husband Eddie; the passing of Mrs Ryan is most deeply regretted by her daughters Noreen (Regan) and Joan (Buckley), sons John, Kevin, PJ and Eamon, sons-in-law Willie and Brendan, grandchildren Paula, Stephen Shane and their mother Sandra, Mark, Kelly and Jamie, great grandchildren Saoirse and Teidi, sister-in-law Peg, nephews, nieces, extended relatives, neighbours and friends.

Funeral Arrangements.

The earthly remains of Mrs Ryan will repose at her place of residence on Thursday evening next, July 22nd, from 5:00pm to 8:00pm, for family and friends.
The funeral cortège will leave her home on Friday morning, to be received into the Church of St. Cataldus, Ballycahill, Thurles, to repose for Requiem Mass at 12:00 noon.
Same will be followed by interment in nearby Ballycahill cemetery, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

Death Announced Of Former Government Minister Mr Des O’Malley.

Sadly, the death has been announced, today, of Mr Desmond Joseph O’Malley, aged 82; latter a prominent Fianna Fáil TD and Minister in the 1970s and 1980s (Minister for Industry & Commerce; Minister for Trade, Commerce & Tourism; Minister for Justice under Taoiseach Jack Lynch) and founder of the Progressive Democrats, leading the latter party from 1985 until 1993.

Educated at the Jesuit Crescent College, Limerick and at University College Dublin, he graduated with a degree in law in 1962.

Following the death of his uncle Mr Donogh O’Malley, latter then Fianna Fail Minister for Education, and previously Health Minister, (who in 1969 announced that all education up to Intermediate Certificate level would be free, and free buses would transport students in rural areas to their nearest school); Mr Desmond O’Malley was elected to Dáil Éireann as a Fianna Fáil TD in the subsequent by-election for the Limerick East constituency, (Thus his nickname ‘The Man from Uncle’) before being appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the then Taoiseach, Jack Lynch, and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence, Mr Jim Gibbon.

He would later be numbered among the membership of the “Gang of 22” following his disillusionment with then Fianna Fáil party leader Mr Charles Haughey and would be expelled from the Fianna Fáil party on February 26th 1985, over his ‘matter of conscience’ in his support for the liberalising of the sale of contraceptives, then opposed by Fianna Fáil.

On December 21st 1985, Mr O’Malley announced the formation of a new party within Irish politics, called the Progressive Democrats, thus playing a significant role in breaking that mould around Civil War politics.

He was joined by Ms Mary Harney (also expelled from Fianna Fáil), and later by Fianna Fáil TDs Mr Bobby Molloy and Mr Pearse Wyse and Fine Gael TD Mr Michael Keating.

At the 1987 general election, the Progressive Democrats won 14 seats, becoming the third-biggest party sitting in Dáil Éireann.
Among the notable TDs elected to represent this new party were Mr O’Malley himself; his cousin Mr Patrick O’Malley; Ms Anne Colley, (daughter of Mr George Colley); Mr Martin Gibbons, (son of Mr Jim Gibbons); Mr Michael McDowell and Mr Martin Cullen.

At the age of 31, Mr O’Malley was appointed Minister for Justice under An Taoiseach Mr Jack Lynch, and took a tough line with the IRA, establishing the Special Criminal Court and introducing the Offences Against the State Act.

In all, Mr O’Malley assisted in transforming the old status quo in Irish politics; dutifully serving the interests of the state, as a TD, from 1968 until 2002.

Death Of Donal Quinlan, Formerly Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

It was with the deepest regret that we learned of the death, on Tuesday 6th July 2021, of Mr Donal Quinlan, Brooke House, Modbury, England; Formerly of Millwood, Killarney, Co. Kerry and Moyne Road, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

The passing of Mr Quinlan is most deeply regretted by his wife of 71 years, Kate, his children Donalda, Simon and Rachael, grandchildren Agnes, Lucy, Mark, Constance, Caragh, Tanguy and Shannon; sons-in-law Paul and Herve; daughter-in-law Grace and great-grandchildren Valentine, Sean, Fleur, Clara, Eloise, Vivienne and Isobel, and their fathers Pierre, Josh, David and Jon.

A memorial service will be held for Mr Quinlan at Buckfast Benedictine Abbey, Buckfastleigh, Devon, United Kingdom.

2,248 Confirmed Covid-19 Cases On Island Of Ireland Today

The Department of Health has confirmed a further 1,110 cases of Covid-19 in the Irish Republic. They also confirm that there are 89 patients in hospital, with 21 of these in ICUs.
Same amounts to almost 7,700 cases of Covid-19 reported in the Republic within the past seven days, an increase of 88% on the previous 7 days.

One in five of Covid positive people being admitted into our hospitals are vaccinated.

A further 1,138 cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed in Northern Ireland today, with, sadly, 1 further death of a patient previously having tested positive for the virus.

In total there are now 2,248 cases of the virus on the whole island of Ireland.

Meanwhile, here in the Irish Republic, the Irish Pharmacy Union are calling on the Health Service Executive to supply Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines to all pharmacists, to allow Covid-19 vaccinations to further continue without interruption, as supplies of the Janssen vaccine begins to slow down.

Waste Material Recovery Space Set To Double In Cabragh Business Park, Thurles.

Tipperary County Council has, by an order dated 16th July, 2021, now decided to grant permission for yet one further development of a single storey, waste material, recovery and transfer facility at the Cabragh Business Park, Ballycurrane, Thurles, Co. Tipperary, much to the regret of many of the local people living in the immediate vicinity.

Initially, back in February last, planning had been sought for a 24.500 ton waste collection centre. Why the sudden change in the recent application is known, however residents are refusing to confirm at this time.

Already, within the same immediate vicinity is yet one other single storey material waste recovery and transfer facility with similar waste storage capacity; allowing for the acceptance and handling of waste materials, again to the amount of 5,000 tonnes per annum. In total now, with both facilities existing within Cabragh Business Park, waste storage has been doubled to 10,000 tonnes per annum.

This new sanctioned planning grant permits for:- (A) the erection of a single storey material recovery and transfer facility building on a floor area of 1031 m sq., (B) a single storage detached prefabricated office building on a floor area of 60 m sq. with signage on both buildings, (C) vehicular access to the site via the existing entrance, (D) a service yard with vehicle weighbridge and vehicle washing area with the site, (E) on-site staff and visitor car parking and truck parking areas, (F) all necessary ancillary site development works to facilitate this development with boundary treatment and landscaping, (G) all associated site works consisting of petrol interceptor and silt traps and connection to existing septic tank and upgraded percolation area with all associated site works.

It has as yet not been established, if persons living within the area will now appeal against this planning grant; to An Bord Pleanala. Same is required within the four weeks, from the date of the making of this decision; i.e. 16th July, 2021, by Tipperary County Council’s Planning Authority.
