Death Of Joe Maher, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

It was with the deepest regret that we learned of the death, on Wednesday 21st July 2021, of Mr Joseph (Joe) Maher, Castlefogarty, Ballycahill, Thurles, Co. Tipperary and formerly of Carrick, Loughmore, Templemore, Co. Tipperary.

Mr Maher passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family.

His passing is most deeply regretted by his loving wife Breeda, son Michael (Ballycahill), and daughters Mary Maher (Thurles), Sadie Maher (Newbridge), Bernie Maher Owens, (Roosky) and Marcella Maher Keogh, (Loughmore), daughter in law Mary (Treacy), sons-in-law William, Mark, Eamonn and Martin, his adored grandchildren Katie, Clodagh, Enda, Sinead, Charlie and Harry, nieces, nephews, extended relatives, neighbours and friends.

Funeral Arrangements.

The earthly remains of Mr Maher will repose at his residence in Ballycahill, for family and close friends, on Saturday evening, July 24th, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.
His body will be received into the Church of St. Cataldus, Ballycahill Thurles, on Sunday afternoon, to repose for Requiem Mass at 2:30pm.
Interment will take place immediately afterwards in Inch Old Cemetry, Inch Lane, Magherareagh, Bouladuff, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

High Court Defamation Claim Against Iconic Newspapers Ltd Fails.

Consultant engineer Mr Michael Reilly (aged 62 years), of Ballycullen, Mullinahone, Thurles, Co Tipperary, has failed in his defamation action against Iconic Newspapers, latter publishers of the ‘Kilkenny People’ newspaper.

Mr Reilly now faces what is believed to be a six-figure legal bill, following the High Court order that he pay the full costs of his five day jury action.

In her decision, Ms Justice Leonie Reynolds, decided that there was no case for the sitting jury to decide, since the article published enjoyed absolute legal privilege as a fair and accurate report of the court proceedings. She therefore withdrew the case from the jury.

The action had been taken following the Kilkenny People newspaper’s report in its February 19th, 2016, edition, which referring to a man of the same name and same address, latter who was convicted of driving with no insurance. The judge remarked in her decision following the withdrawing of the case from the jury, that it was unfortunate Mr Reilly did not avail of a published clarification offered by the newspaper to have the matter resolved at the earliest opportunity.

Mr Reilly, the court heard, was himself experienced in litigation, as indeed was his partner Ms Monica Leech. Ms Leech, herself a former PR consultant, had been awarded €1.25 million in a defamation action taken in 2009, following a series of Evening Herald newspaper articles, had been holidaying with Mr Reilly in France, when Mr Reilly first became aware of the published newspaper article.

Thurles Humour.

Thurles resident, Paddy Alphonsus Murphy, called to the Department of Social Protection at Thurles, Co. Tipperary; his business to apply for his entitlement to a State Old Age Pension.

The lady behind the counter asked him for his driver’s license, explaining that she wished to verify his age. He began to search his pockets, before coming to the realization that he must have left his wallet in another jacket pocket.

Swearing under his breath, he apologised, informing the female welfare officer that he was very sorry, but he seemed to have left his wallet at his home. “Sure listen”, said Paddy, “I will have to go home and come back later in the afternoon.”

The woman said, “Sir, please unbutton your shirt.”

Thinking it was some sort of required medical examination, Paddy, somewhat confused, complied; opening his shirt to reveal a chest covered in curly silver hair.

“That silver hair on your chest is proof enough for me”, said the lady officer, as she began to process his application.

When Paddy eventually gets home, he informs his wife Marge about the mornings happenings at the Thurles Social Welfare Office.

When he was finished extolling the virtues of the welfare officer, Marge remarked, “You should have dropped your trousers, she might have included Disability Benefit with your pension claim as well.”

Death Of Tade Dwyer, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

It was with the deepest regret that we learned of the death, yesterday Wednesday 21st July 2021, of Mr Timothy (Tade) Dwyer, Grange, Holycross, Co. Tipperary and formerly of Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

Pre-deceased by his wife Alice, infant son Gerard and infant daughter Mary-Theresa; Mr Dwyer passed away peacefully, following a short illness.

His passing is most deeply regretted by his loving family; daughters Anna (Manser) and Carmel (Buckley), sons James, Phil, Conor, Timmy and John, grandchildren, sons-in-law Bill and Ned, daughters-in-law Annabelle, Paula, Fiona, Derbhala and Jennifer, nephews, nieces, sisters-in-law Sally Dwyer (Killough), Mary Dwyer (Whitford) and Mary Ryan (Clogher), extended relatives, neighbours and many friends.

The funeral cortège bearing the earthly remains of Mr Dwyer will be received into the Abbey Church at Holycross, Thurles, on Monday morning, July 26th, at 11:00am, to repose for Requiem Mass at 11:30am.
Interment will take place immediately afterwards in the adjoining graveyard.

Death Of Rita Treacy, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

It was with the deepest regret that we learned of the death, yesterday Wednesday 21st July 2021, of Mrs Margaret (Rita) Treacy (née Searson), Castlefogarty, Ballycahill, Thurles, Co. Tipperary and formerly of Corville, Roscrea Co. Tipperary.

Pre-deceased by her husband Peter; Mrs Treacy passed away peacefully, while in the care of staff of South Tipperary General Hospital, Clonmel, Co. Tipperary.

Her passing is most deeply regretted by her sons Seamus, Pat, Seán, Brendan and Paul, daughters Monica (McEntee), Geraldine (Walshe) and Catherine (Brophy), their partners Jordi, Anne Ita, Nuala, Adriana, Mary, Dave, Hilary and Paul, her adored grandchildren Oisín, Naoíse, Niamh, Muireann, Orlaith, Rían, Cormac, Conor, Éabha, Sinéad, Cathal and Saoirse, sisters Anne (Dublin), Eileen (Cavan) and Kathleen (Roscrea), brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended relatives, neighbours and friends.

The earthly remains of Mrs Treacy will repose at the residence of her daughter Geraldine in Ballycahill, for family and close friends, on Friday evening July 23rd from 5:00pm to 8:00pm.
Her body will be received into the Church of St. Cataldus, Ballycahill, Thurles, on Saturday afternoon, July 24th, to further repose for Requiem Mass at 4:00pm. Interment will take place immediately afterwards in the nearby Ballycahill Cemetery.
