For many years here in Thurles, the youth musical theatre group, best known as ‘Phoenix Productions’ have been bringing annually to the stage, performances par excellence.
On this coming St. Patrick’s weekend 2019; in Scoil Ailbhe, for two nights only, beginning Friday March 15th and ending on Saturday March 16th, Phoenix Productions will give two performances, beginning sharp at 8.00pm on both nights.
“Back to Broadway”
Tickets for this show, entitled “Back to Broadway” will cost €10 for children and €12 for adults.
As the years have progressed, many of these same young Thurles performers have carried on their immense passion for music theatre and are regularly invited to join other renowned musical theatre groups and societies; household names in entertainment, from both around this country and indeed abroad, because of their undoubted talent and intimate knowledge of stage craft.
So, do come along and give them your support and encouragement, thus ensuring that such talent is continued on into the future, here in Thurles.

“Join us in Thurles Library during Seachtain na Gaeilge (English – “Irish language week”), for a ‘Coffee Morning’ on Wednesday, March 13th, at 11.00am and enjoy a great Irish Music, Song and Dance performance from the pupils of our local Gaelscoil Bhríde, Durlas Éile. Mr Jimmy Duggan will be ‘Fear an Tí’,(‘Man Of the House’ ) or Director for the session.

Note: Seachtain na Gaeilge[English – “Irish language week” ], is a non-profit organisation here in Ireland, which promotes use of the Irish language during a two-week festival held at the beginning of March every year, just before Saint Patrick’s Day, latter which is celebrated annually on March 17th.
Parents Take Note: Exciting Thurles Library Events Happening During February 2019 – Ms Suzanne Brosnan (Thurles Library) Reports:-
Healthy Ireland
As part of Healthy Ireland, Thurles Library branch will host two mindfulness workshops for children on Saturday 2nd of February. These workshops will be facilitated by Tipperary Mindfulness practitioner Máire Shanahan. Mindfulness awareness exercises help children and young people to develop concentration, self-awareness and improve resilience. The first workshop will take place from 2.00pm-3.00pm and is suitable for children aged between 9-12 years. The second session will begin at 3.30pm-4.30pm and is suitable for teens 13 years plus.
Our second Healthy Ireland event will take place on Saturday 16th February. Alexsandra Mitura will host a Zumba taster class for children in Thurles Library from 2.30pm-3.30pm. Zumba is an aerobic fitness programme, featuring movements inspired by various styles of Latin American dance and performed to Latin American dance music.
Tipperary Young Readers Awards (TYRA’s) Presentation
Over 250 students completed our TYRAs (Tipperary Young Readers Awards) and will receive their awards on Saturday 16th February from 10.30am-12.30pm.
Book Clinic
The Book Clinic will be in the library from 10.30-1pm and 2-3.30pm. If you are a reader and looking for the next series to delve into or need a prescription for an exciting new read? Then pop along to Thurles Library and meet the CBI book clinic doctors. They will be ready to offer you advice and get a new personalized list of books to suit your reading tastes to take away! The Book Clinic is free of charge and a great way to discover new authors!
Animal Magic
Animal Magic will be in Thurles Library on Saturday 16th February from 10.30-12.30pm. Pop in and meet Rosie Campbell and her animal friends. When you are finished learning all about animals why not turn your hand at some science experiments. Anyone4Science will host a drop-in workshop with Angela McGlynn form 10.30am-12.30pm.

The eye-patch wearing and super entertainer Ray Sawyer, vocalist with 1970’s band Dr Hook & the Medicine Show, alas, has died aged 81. Ray passed away in Daytona Beach, Florida, on December 31st, 2018, following a brief illness.
The band are best known for their refrains from the pen of songwriter Shel Silverstein; “Cover of the Rolling Stone”, “Sylvia’s Mother” and Even Stevens lyric, “When You’re in Love with a Beautiful Woman”, latter which was a number one hit in the UK in 1979.
His death was confirmed by his wife Linda, who stated her husband had died “peacefully in his sleep”, adding further that her “heart is broken”.
Born in Chickasaw, Alabama, on February 1st 1937, Ray Sawyer joined Dr Hook in 1969, two years after he had lost the sight in his right eye, following an auto-mobile accident. While not the appointed lead singer in the band, playing occasional percussionist on maracas; it was Ray’s cowboy hat, fun stage antics and idiosyncratic eye patch that distinguished him long into the memory of his multitude of adoring 1970’s fans.
Oh, and a point of information; the band’s dream of getting their picture on the cover of the ‘Rolling Stone’ did eventually come true, but in caricature only.

As the years have progressed, many of these young performers have continued on in their great love of musical theatre and are regularly invited to join other well known musical theatre groups and societies both around Ireland and abroad, because of their undoubted talent and their knowledge base of professional stage craft.
To ensure and encourage that such talents are continued on by young performers into the future here in Thurles and elsewhere, this Saturday, December 22nd. 2018, the Society supporting Phoenix Productions are holding a “Mulled Wine and Mince Pie morning”(or Coffee for those driving), at the former old School House, on Slievenamon Road, Thurles, (Opposite Ely’s Centra Store & Petrol Station.), latter now home to the Societies Director / Producer Mr Gerard O’Brien.
This event will commence sharp at 10.00am in the morning, and run until 3.00pm in the afternoon, with full proceeds from this event going to support Phoenix Production’s next exciting musical extravaganza.
So please do take a well deserved break from your busy Christmas shopping and pop into the old School House for a relaxing cup of Coffee, a glass of Mulled Wine and Mince Pies.
