 A man in his 20’s was arrested in the Tipperary area, shortly after 5.00pm yesterday, before being brought to Dungarvan Garda Station for questioning.
His questioning is understood to be with regard to the horrific murder of pensioner Mr Paddy Lyons, aged 90, who was attacked with a blunt weapon in his home in Loughreagh, Ballysaggart in Co. Waterford on Friday last.
The arrested male is being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, which allows Gardaí to detain him, without charge, for up to 24 hours. Gardaí are understood to have also moved to examine a property on the Waterford Road, out of Clonmel, Co. Tipperary. Reports this morning state that the area remains sealed off, with a considerable Gardaí presence; searching grounds surrounding the dwelling house.
It is understood that Mr Lyons, when found, had suffered horrific injuries to his head and in particular the facial area. Unconfirmed reports believe Mr Lyons may possibly have known the killer from previous visits to his isolated dwelling, same situated just 11km (6.9mls) from the tourist area of Lismore in Co. Waterford.
It has also been suggested that a number of other people may have visited the home of Mr Lyons, also on the same day that he was savagely murdered.
Gardaí in Dungarvan continue to appeal for witnesses to contact them on Tel: 058 48600, or the Garda Confidential Line on Tel: 1800 666 111 or indeed through any Garda station.
 A total of fifty trainee Gardaí from the Garda Training College, Templemore, Thurles assisted as part of Operation Thor’s ‘Project Storm’, in which Gardaí arrested 48 people and carried out 21 planned searches in the Carlow area over the past three days.
Of those arrested, 24 were detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 as part of ongoing investigations into thefts, assaults, fraud and burglary in Tipperary, Carlow, Kilkenny, Cork and Waterford, as well as drug related matters.
A further five persons were arrested for the purpose of charge and will appear before future sittings of Carlow District Court. Nineteen of those arrested were held on foot of existing warrants.
A total of 42 checkpoints were also manned at locations across the District during this operation and two vehicles were seized under Road Traffic Acts. Crime Prevention Leaflets were distributed at checkpoints and Community Engagement Centres were also set up at various locations.
On Thursda y 16th & Friday 17th February 2017, a Road Safety Seminar focusing on raising road safety awareness for Transition Year students, will be held at Mary Immaculate College (MIC) St. Patrick’s Campus, Cathedral Street, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.
Students from the Districts of Thurles and Nenagh will be in attendance on both days. This is the 7th successive year that this event has taken place, however it is the first time it is being held outside of the Garda Síochána College.
“Previously the event was held at the Garda Training College in, Templemore, however due to the recent increase in Garda students, the college will be unable to facilitate us this year. We are very fortunate to have such an excellent location at MIC, St. Patrick’s Campus Thurles on our doorstep. The College have been very gracious in allowing us to use their facilities for such an important event,” stated Forensic Collision Investigator, Garda Murphy.
Across these two days, the seminar will be attended by Transition Year students from:

Coláiste Mhuire Co-Ed, Thurles – 16th February.
Coláiste Phobail Ros Cre, Roscrea – 16th February.

Approximately 200 students are expected to be in attendance on each of the two days. An additional 25 persons will also be in attendance on both days to include, guest speakers, VIP’s and teachers. The event is expected to commence at 10.00am on each day, ending at 3.00pm.
“As this seminar is focussing on Road Safety, we have invited a number of subject relevant guests to participate. These will include representatives from the Road Safety Authority, An Garda Síochána Traffic Corps, The National Ambulance Service and a serious injury collision survivor.”

 A sewage plant worker, aged 55, has been awarded €47,400 by the High Court. This follows a fall on a pathway at the side of a sewage flume (an open gravity chute used for conveying raw sewage) at his place of work.
Mr James Kelly from Corville Road, Roscrea, Co Tipperary had sued Templemore Town Council as a result of his fall at the plant on February 3rd, 2010. Mr Kelly had been working at the sewage treatment plant, which was being decommissioned, and claimed there had been a failure to provide a safe place of work, in that he had not been provided with appropriate tools to undertake the work operation.
Templemore Town Council in 2017 now come under the Municipal District structure established under the Local Government Reform Act of 2014; thus replacing the earlier sub-county structure of 2010 which is now officially recognised as the Templemore / Thurles Municipal District; one of five such Municipal Districts within the county of Tipperary.
Mr Justice Raymond Fullam, however, in his decision held that Mr Kelly, was 40% responsible for the accident, thus reducing his initial award from €79,000 to €47,400. While the claims were denied, Mr Kelly informed the court that he now suffered from bad head and back ache, which he solely attributed to being a result of the his accident.
Mr Justice Fullam accepted Mr Kelly’s evidence, that there had been an issue with the pumping system at the time, which had allowed sewage waste to overflow from the inlet channel unto the hard standing surrounds of the flume, leading to Mr Kelly’s accident on the day.
Mountrath, Co.Laois Olympic boxer Mr Michael O’Reilly, aged 23, who left the Olympic Games in Rio after news emerged of a failed drugs test, has been charged with three new criminal damage offences as a result of an alleged incident in Ballybeg, Littleton, Co. Tipperary, on April 18th of last year.
Mr Michael O’Reilly was due to compete with the Olympic middleweight boxing division in Rio during August of last year. The boxer had already been before Thurles District Court charged with being intoxicated in a public place and engaging in abusive, insulting or threatening behaviour.
Garda Sergeant Declan O’Carroll informed Judge Elizabeth MacGrath at Thurles district court this week that Mr O’Reilly had made no reply to any of the charges laid against him. The court heard that a charge relating to an alleged breach of the Public Order Act in failing to comply with the directions of a member of an Garda Síochána, was being withdrawn by the State.
Sergeant O’Carroll asked for an adjournment of the case until March 7th next, when two other co-accused would also be brought before the court in the coming weeks; while requesting the only new bail condition the Gardaí required in relation to Mr O’Reilly was that he stayed away from the Littleton area. Acting solicitor for Mr O’Reilly, Mr J.J. Fitzgerald, stated that there would be no objection to this new condition, since Mr O’Reilly had no known business in the area.
Judge Elizabeth MacGrath then agreed to remand the accused on continuing bail until March 7th next, on his own surety of €500, with the additional condition requested by an Garda Síochána also granted, that he stayed away from Littleton in Co. Tipperary.
