Membership of the Review Commission on the Future of Policing in Ireland unveiled.
The Cabinet have approved a 12 member Review Commission to undertake a ‘root and branch’ review of an Garda Síochána.
In announcing the Commission, An Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality Mrs Frances Fitzgerald has stated that along with a final report; this new Commission will also introduce and hasten immediate recommendations, which it justifiably feels requires to be implemented within the immediate or short term.
 Ms Noeline Blackwell. The new 12 member review body will include former Tipperary Solicitor Ms Noeline Blackwell; herself a human rights lawyer who is currently Chief Executive of the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre, and was formerly the Director General of the Free Legal Advice Centre (FLAC).
Ms Blackwell began her career as a solicitor here in Co.Tipperary in the mid 1970’s at the age of 21, gaining a wide range of legal experience under then employer Mr Kieran Flynn, for some 8 years, before moving to Dublin to set up in practice in the 1980’s.
Named Membership of Review Commission
Along with Ms Blackwell, the new Commission will be Chaired by Ms Kathleen O’Toole, (Seattle Police Chief), and other membership will include Mr Conor Brady (Former Editor of the Irish Times, Sunday Tribune and a previous member of the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission from 2005 to 2011); Dr Johnny Connolly (Irish Research Council Enterprise Scholar at the Centre for Crime, Justice and Victim Studies at the School of Law in the University of Limerick); Dr Vicky Conway (Current Lecturer in criminal law and criminology in the School of Law and Governance in DCU); Mr Tim Dalton (Retired Secretary General of the Department of Justice and Equality); Sir Peter Fahy (Chief Constable of Cheshire and previous Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police with 13,000 staff under his command); Dr Eddie Molloy (Independent Management Consultant, Director Advanced Organisation, specialising in Strategy, Organisation Change and Innovation); Ms Tonita Murray (International Police Development Consultant); Dr Antonio M. Oftelie (Executive Director, Leadership for a Networked World and Fellow, Technology and Entrepreneurship Center at Harvard); Professor Donncha O’Connell (Established Professor of Law at the School of Law, NUI Galway), and finally Ms Helen Ryan (Former Chief Executive Officer of Creganna-Tactx Medical from 2005 – 2013).
 Gardaí appear to be “hot on the heels” of raiders who escaped with a small amount of cash, having ransacked the home of former Tipperary hurler Mr Jimmy Campion, aged 94, and his wife Mrs Mary Campion, aged 87, in Roscrea, Co. Tipperary, on Saturday night-week last.
The gang members, who also attacked the couple on the night of May 7th last; striking Mr Campion over the head with his own walking stick, leaving him needing several stitches to head wounds, are suspect in a spate of past home burglaries, committed across the Munster and Connacht area, over the past number of years.
Mr Campion, who has now been discharged from the Midland Regional Hospital, in Portlaoise, following his ordeal, is said to be making a good recovery from the injuries to his head.
Yesterday morning Gardaí, who have identified a travelling gang whom they believe are responsible, visited a number of addresses in South County Dublin, including one halting site. During these visits, mobile phones and other articles believed to be linked to the Roscrea raid, were removed for forensic examination, and as part of an evidence-gathering operation. Specialists from the Garda Technical Bureau will now forensically examine clothing taken in the raids, while mobile phones removed will be sent for full scrutiny to the computer crime unit.
Individuals suspected of involvement in this crime are understood to have departed from their previous known addresses, since this recent serious criminal occurrence.
These raids yesterday follow a close study of CCTV footage, taken from various security cameras which were located on or near the Old Dublin Road area of Roscrea town.

 Cannabis Yesterday a man, aged 34 years, was arrested in connection with a significant drug seizure; latter made in the West Tipp area last week.
The male, a native of Wales, and who has been named as Mr Wesley Pause, with his address given as Cloghera, Bansha, Co. Tipperary, appeared in court today.
On Thursday morning last, May 4th, Gardaí from the town of Tipperary reported locating a cannabis grow house in the townsland vicinities of Ballydavid, Bansha and Rossadrehid, Glen of Aherlow; one of Tipperary’s most attractive and scenic holiday destinations.
With an estimated street value of around €80,000 to €90,000; over 100 cannabis plants were discovered on the property, which Gardaí state were being propagated, using a rather sophisticated system of cultivation.
The man who was arrested on Gladstone St. in Clonmel yesterday, was today further remanded to Limerick prison, and is next expected to appear at Thurles District Court on Tuesday next.
Gardaí in Tipperary town continue to appeal to those persons who may have observed suspicious activity of any kind in the Ballydavid / Rossadrehid area over recent weeks, to contact them on Tel: (062) 80670 or (062) 80677.
A man, aged 94 has been removed by ambulance to the Midlands Regional Hospital in Portlaoise, suffering with head injuries, following an aggravated burglary at his home here in North Tipperary.
Gardaí confirm that the man was in the family home at Old Dublin Road, Roscrea, Co Tipperary, with his wife, when two men broke through a side window in the building around 11.40pm last night, before assaulted the 90-year-old.
During the break-in the female, aged in her 80’s, although suffering from shock, thankfully remained uninjured.
Gardaí believe that a quantity of cash was taken during the raid, and have sealed off the building for a forensic examination.

 Circuit Court Judge Mr Tom O’Donnell commended Gardaí, led by Cork Detective Inspector Joe Moore; Detective Garda Michael Brosnan, and Detective Garda Ailish Murphy, yesterday, for their exceptional investigative skills; used to track down a gang of thieves over a two-year period.
The statement was made during a case heard at Limerick Circuit Court where an Eastern European gang member, was being jailed for five and a half years, for his involvement in numerous burglaries.
The court had previously heard that the man, who was of Lithuanian origin; named as Mr Aurimas Petraska had used cars, loaded with concrete blocks, as battering rams to smash into retail stores fronts, across Munster and the mid-west region, stealing expensive women’s clothing and perfumes. Amongst the premises raided and ransacked were O’Briens Pharmacy, Cahir, in Co. Tipperary, where €20,000 worth of ‘CHANEL’ products were stolen.
Mr Petraska is believed to have been a leading operative in an Eastern European gang, of which other members are presently being pursued by international police e.g. Interpol and Europol and which now also involves Gardaí, the court was told.
Mr Petraska refused to disclose to Gardaí the identify of his boss and other associates, however he admitted that he was paid between €2,000 to €3,000 for his involvement in each of the burglaries.
