Continued Job Losses In Rural Tipperary

dawn-ffDawn Fresh Foods Ltd, with an address at Killenaule Road, Fethard, County Tipperary have officially announced that its production facility is to close, starting with immediate effect on a phased basis.

The decision will effect an estimated 104 of the companies permanent workforce, latter who will be made redundant as a direct result of the closure. Employees were informed at a meeting on Friday last and the closure is expected to be completed by December of this current year.

The decision follows five years of tough trading conditions for the company, beginning in September 2008 when 32 workers being laid off.

The company, which manufactures Ready-Made Meals and which exports 80% of all output from their Fethard plant, has experienced a severe reduction in sales, especially since the horse meat controversy, while the weakness of sterling has also had an effect.

The company will now enter a thirty day consultation period with staff, in the hope that some viable, workable rescue plan can be constructed.

Nationally 13.5% of the Irish workforce were formally out of work in July of this year. In June 2013 the rate was 13.6%, with new jobs only being announced for the larger cities, while rural areas continue to be totally neglected.

Two-Mile-Borris Casino Could Become A Reality

Model of proposed Two-Mile-Borris Casino

Model of proposed Two-Mile-Borris Casino

The current FG/Labour Government is planning to introduce new legislation to allow small Casinos the right to operate in Ireland, but will continue to maintain the existing ban on Super Casinos.

Two restrictions will apply in this expected legislation, namely Size & Location. Size will be restricted by the number of tables that each Casino can install, thus possibly ruling out the Las Vegas-style Casino previously promoted by former Garda Richard Quirke, of Dr Quirkey’s Goodtime Emporium fame and supported by Michael Lowry TD here in Tipperary.

These, about to be published proposals, are understood to introduce new laws regulating all currently run gambling establishments and will require Casinos to contribute to a fund for gambling addiction treatment programmes and gambling awareness campaigns and could see the creation of a new post with the appointment of a Gambling Regulator.

Such introduced new legislation will be the first time that public Casinos, which currently exist in a legal vacuum, will be able to operate on a full legal basis here in Ireland and thus clear the way for a scaled down model of the Casino planned for Two-Mile-Borris, Thurles, Co Tipperary.

A public symposium designed to discuss exactly how big a Casino can actually grow is being planned by Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence, Alan Shatter TD, but this new legislation could revive the shelved Tipperary project.

Thurles Set To Lose Another 20 Jobs

BritvicBritvic plc, who collectively employ approximately 3,500 people and globally sell some 1.9bn litres of soft drinks each year, have announced a range of restructuring proposals within their corporate organisation, aimed at achieving even greater operating efficiency.  These measures include a proposal to separate the Britvic Ireland wholesaling business into a complete stand-alone entity, thus relocating their present supporting customer care activities.

Regrettably for Thurles Co Tipperary, these Customer Care activities will now transfer from the Tipperary Technology Park, Nenagh Road in the town to Dublin, offering redeployment opportunities.

Britvic plc have exclusive bottling agreements with PepsiCo in the UK and Ireland for global brands such as Pepsi, Mountain Dew Energy and 7UP and is one of Europe’s leading soft drinks companies, with an enviable portfolio of market leading brands, such as Robinsons, J2O, Fruit Shoot, Tango and Drench in GB, MiWadi, Club and Ballygowan in Ireland, and Teisseire, Fruité and Pressade in France.

Addressing shocked local employees in the past week, a Britvic spokesperson reiterated earlier statements: “Britvic remains fully committed to Ireland and to mitigating any job losses arising from this intended reorganisation and a consultation process with our Thurles based staff will commence immediately, with same aimed at maximizing redeployment opportunities.

Early reports this month had suggested that these changes, within the company, would see Britvic’s Ballygowan water become the only water brand supplied to the UK, replacing its other water brands, while production currently carried out in Britain would be transferred to the company’s facility here in Thurles, where it was suggested Britvic had enormous spare capacity. However, these changes would now appear not to be fully practical.

Looking at the overall unemployment situation presently in Thurles, one is reminded of the words of Cecil Woodham-Smith, taken from her authoritative book “The Great Hunger: Ireland: 1845-1849,” quote “Industry and enterprise were extinguished and a peasantry created which was one of the most destitute in Europe.”

The Hotel is one of four hotels in the group, with the Arklow Bay in Wicklow, and the Springhill Court Hotel situated in Kilkenny also in receivership.

The fourth hotel in the group, the Green Isle in Dublin, is not affected and continues to trade as normal.

Hotel Asset Management Services (HAMS), a company formally set up to manage hotels which get into trading difficulties, has confirmed that it had been appointed to manage the three affected hotels.

This news follows the appointment earlier this week of a provisional liquidator to the Ballykisteen Hotel near Limerick Junction, Tipperary town & last month both the Hayes Hotel and Anner Hotel in Thurles, Co Tipperary.

All the hotels above named continue to trade, for the moment, with all staff remaining employed, however this news further highlights the neglect of Tipperary by this present government, with regard to the promotion of tourism in the county.
