Two Cork Men Sentenced For Thurles Crime

D.Duggan

Mr Don Duggan

Mr Justice Thomas Teehan was correctly accepting no nonsense in Nenagh Court today, when it came to dealing with two individual burglary cases which were before him; their crimes previously committed in the Thurles Urban area.

Mr Don Duggan, a 28 year old Co. Cork man, with an address at No. 65, Ballinderry Park, Mayfield, Cork City, was sentenced to six years in prison for a number of thefts.  Mr Duggan, had pleaded guilty to stealing a motor vehicle and carrying out burglaries on three known dates in Thurles, during August 2015.

Mr Duggan had previously been charged with the unlawful taking of a vehicle at Thurles Railway Station and with using this vehicle, without the owner’s consent (which he crashed), at Springhill, Glanmire, Co. Cork. He had been further charged with the unlawful possession of a .22 calibre Anshutz rifle; three .22 calibre bullets and four unlawfully held shotgun cartridges, also at Springhill, Glanmire, on the same date; all contrary to Section 2 of the Firearms Act.

Judge Teehan learned that Mr Duggan, had some 116 previously known convictions and was already serving a prison sentence for yet other crime, with sentencing not due to expire until October of 2020. Passing sentence, Judge Teehan therefore directed that this new six year sentence, (which had the final three years suspended), should not commence until the expiry date of Mr Duggan’s current jail term, due to expire in some three and a half years time.

A victim impact statement read out by one of Mr Duggan’s victims; a 75 year old lady living alone, no doubt received his consideration prior his passing sentence in Nenagh today.

WantedIn yet another case, Mr Noel O’Shaughnessy, a 49 year old man, with an address at No. 7, Farran Ferris Park, Farranree, Co. Cork, was jailed for three years for a burglary at Mr Lar Corbett’s Bar; committed at the end of August 2015.

Mr O’Shaughnessy, who had 188 recognised previous convictions and was already out on bail for another crime at the time of this particular incident, also pleaded guilty to one count of burglary in “Lar Corbett’s” at Coppinger’s Bar, Parnell Street, Thurles; during which a sum of money was stolen.

In February of this year Mr O’Shaughnessy had previously appeared before Killorglin District Court, charged with the theft of two Munster Final match tickets, a woman’s handbag containing €1,165, an iPhone and other items, during his visits to the Nike Killarney Store and a Killarney pub, respectively, in August of last year.

Judge Tom Teehan today sentenced Mr O’Shaughnessy to seven years imprisonment; with his incarceration beginning from today; four years of which was suspended.

Murdered Director Much Admired In Thurles Musical Circles

John-Donnelly-(2)Mr John Donnelly, the Irishman found murdered in west Turkey, on Friday morning last, will be well known to members of Thurles Musical Society and indeed some older members of Vincé Productions and Phoenix Productions, here in Thurles.

The lifeless body of Mr Donnelly, aged 64 and who was from Dublin, was found on the floor of his apartment in Bodrum on the southern coast of Bodrum Peninsula; port city of Muğla Province, in the south western Aegean Region of Turkey; latter a popular annual resort for thousands of Irish visitors.

Turkish police authorities have stated that Mr Donnelly died from a single stab wound to his back, indicating that a robbery appeared to have taken place at the apartment. Indeed Police have confirmed that Mr Donnelly’s apartment had been ransacked and a bloodied knife had been located by neighbours; found outside the building. Police also confirmed that CCTV footage showed visual evidence of two men having left the scene of Mr Donnelly’s apartment earlier that night, and that no Islamic, political or religious motive is suspected or indeed being considered, in relation to this horrendous homicide.

A former retired Irish Customs Service employee, Mr Donnelly was a well-known and much admired amateur Musical Director. In late 2010 he directed the cast, including three Tipperary performers, in the then ground breaking musical “Spring Awakening,” which was performed in Dublin’s Helix building and on the 50th anniversary of Waterford’s International Festival of Light Opera.

The Spring Awakening cast, under his Direction that year, walked off stage taking multiple awards; including; ‘Best Lighting’, ‘Best Costumes’, ‘Best Set’, ‘Special Adjudicators Award’, ‘Best Musical Direction’ and the much coveted ‘Best Overall Show Award’ for the 2010 Festival. The Adjudicator for that 2010 Waterford International Festival of Light Opera was Mr Tony Finnegan, also a popular Director of musical shows for Thurles Musical Society; himself a holder of many Comedy, Acting, Singing and Directing awards to his credit.

Our sincere sympathies are with his family and musical colleagues at this time.

Tipperary Victims Of Dublin Bombings 1972 / 1974

Today, the 17th of May 2016, marks the 42nd anniversary of the Dublin and Monaghan bombings in 1974.

Four devices exploded in both counties, taking the lives of 33 civilians and a full-term unborn child, while injuring almost 300 other innocent civilians; whose only crime was being in the vicinity.

In Dublin city three car bombs were detonated without warning, during rush hour on the 17th of May 1974, and shortly afterwards another bomb was exploded in Monaghan, some ninety minutes later.

Here in Co. Tipperary, today in particular, we remember two victims of this outrage; namely M/s Breda Turner and Maureen Shields.

Parnell-Street-

Miss Breda Turner aged just 21 was working in the Office of the Revenue Commissioners, the primary State Body responsible for the assessment and collection of Taxes and other Duties here in the Republic of Ireland.  Originally from Thurles, in Co. Tipperary, she had moved to Dublin and was engaged to be married on the following Easter.

Murdered in the Parnell Street explosion; M/s Turner was then survived by her parents, Bridget (Biddy) and Jimmy, together with other siblings.

Mrs Maureen Shields aged 46 was originally from the village of Hollyford, Co. Tipperary.  Maureen had moved to Dublin, where she also worked in the Civil Service until her marriage to Leo in 1953. The couple had one son and two daughters.

Maureen was murdered in the Talbot Street explosion.

At this time of remembrance, let us not forget the Tipperary victim of the Dublin bombing of the 1st of December 1972.

Mr George Bradshaw, aged just 30, was a bus conductor from Fethard, in Co. Tipperary, one of two male victims who died when a car bomb exploded at Sackville Place at approximately 8.15pm on that fateful day. Both victims were bus drivers with CIE and brutally murdered, having just left the nearby CIÉ Workers’ Club.

Mr Bradshaw had only moved to Dublin less than two years previously. Married to wife Kathleen, a nurse from Belfast; both were parents to two young children, Lynn and Rory.

While these Dublin and Monaghan crimes in 1974 were the biggest mass murder in the history of the Irish state, no one person has ever been charged with these bombings. The Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF), a loyalist paramilitary group from Northern Ireland, claimed responsibility for the bombings in 1993.

Former Northern Ireland Police Ombudsman, Baroness Nuala O’Loan, found that Special Branch officers gave the killers immunity and officers ensured that the murderers were never caught.

Tipperary’s Rural Tourism Trade Threatened

Ministers

Charles Flanagan, TD, & Paschal Donohoe T.D.

Efforts to attract Australian tourists for the year ahead here to Co. Tipperary, would appear bleak, following a serious unwarranted travel warning currently being issued to Australian tourists, who maybe planning to visit Ireland this Summer

A website claiming to represent the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade [Read by clicking here for yourselves.] has issued a warning to Australian tourists intent on visiting Ireland; stating tensions are high between Unionists and Republicans because of the Centenary Celebrations being held and relating to the 1916 Easter Rising.

The Australian website states;  “Tensions between Dissident Republicans and Unionists have increased in the lead up to the centenary of the Easter Rising (24-29 April – Proclamation of Irish independence). You should avoid all protests and demonstrations, including those associated with Northern Ireland, as they may turn violent. Instances of civil disorder can rapidly escalate into violence and you should avoid them wherever possible, including through careful monitoring of the media and following the advice of local authorities”.

The website warns that;  “Be aware that Ireland is not a party to the Schengen Agreement and therefore does not accept Schengen visas. Visa and other entry and exit requirements can change at short notice, you (visitors) should contact the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service, or the nearest Irish Embassy or Consulate for the latest visa information and advice”.

Thankfully there is one very noticeable omission from the supplied, defamatory and libellous data however. Same is that Ireland, despite a general election having been held on February 26th to elect 157 Teachtaí Dála (TDs) across 40 constituencies to our Irish Parliament, Dáil Éireann; to date no government has been agreed, despite some €1.6 million in wages having been earned by those then deemed democratically elected.

Perhaps the current ‘Squatting’ Fine Gael government Minister’s for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Mr Paschal Donohoe T.D. and the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mr Charles Flanagan, TD, could both come into the office some day this week to drop a note to the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs, pointing out the inaccuracies of the information in their supplied data.

Meanwhile; “Attention all you Australian Tourists planning a visit to Ireland”. Please come to Co. Tipperary; enjoy the undemanding wooded trails and pilgrimage walks; appreciate and soak in our sylvan beauty; rid yourself of the stresses and strains of modern life; feel free, in complete safety, to view our historical artefacts and castles and more importantly stay in our Hotel and Guest-houses, all of which cost half the price of similar accommodation to be found in our major cities.

Understand the true meaning of “Céad Míle Fáilte Romhat” [English Translation – One hundred thousand welcomes to you.]  Do so with the secure feeling that you will meet the friendliest and most lovable of local people and with the knowledge that even Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II moved amongst us freely back in 2011.
