Six further individuals have been arrested as part of “Operation Coronation”, following searches last Wednesday in counties Tipperary, Limerick and Clare, latter targeting associates and interests supporting organised crime in Co. Limerick. This brings to 20 the number of people arrested as part of a Garda investigation into organised crime in the mid-west region.
Last Wednesday evening, June 17th, further searches resulted in the recovery of €40,000 in cash, along with evidence relating to the sale and supply of controlled drugs. A total of 11 bank accounts had already been frozen, containing in excess of €200,000.
Four high-value cars were seized with one vehicle seized for having no valid insurance.
On Saturday morning last, June 20th, a further search of waste ground in the area of Prospect, Co Limerick, located two firearms and a telescopic, expandable Taser stun baton; found all protected by plastic wrapping.
A number of the individuals arrested have now been charged; having appeared before the court. Files on a number of others also arrested and facing charges, are expected to appear before the courts over the coming weeks, once files have been prepared by the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The funeral of Detective Garda Colm Horkan shot dead in Castlerea, Co Roscommon on Thursday last, will take place in his home town of Charlestown on Sunday next.
As a mark of respect, books of condolence have been opened at garda stations all over the country including here in Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

The Mayo native joined the Garda in 1994 and attended at the Garda Training College in Templemore, Co. Tipperary, at the same time as sadly the late Detective Garda Adrian Donohue, latter also fatally shot dead in Bellurgan, Co Louth on the 25th January 2013, during a robbery on a Credit Union office, by an armed gang of five people.
Described by all who knew him as the quintessential local guard; well reputed and always available for any problem, big or small; alas, Det. Gda. Horkan, who had only been assigned to plain clothes duty a few weeks ago, has now become the 89th member of An Garda Síochána to be slain, at the age of just 49 years.
Predeceased by his mother Dolores and twin sister Colette; Det. Gda. Horkan will be sadly missed by his heartbroken family; father Marty; sister Deirdre; brothers Aiden, Brendan, Dermot and Padraig; sisters-in-law; aunts Kitty (Walsh, Charlestown), Colette (Brennan) and Vera (Hora, USA); nieces; nephews; extended relatives; colleagues in An Garda Síochána; neighbours and wide circle of friends.
Detective Garda Colm Horkan will lie in repose at the family funeral home on Saturday afternoon, with removal on Sunday morning to arrive at St. James’s Church, Charlestown for Funeral Mass at 12:00 noon, followed by interment in the adjoining cemetery.

Gardaí in Roscrea, North Co. Tipperary, as part of “Operation Nest” have arrested two people and seized drugs and cash to the value of €3,650.
Multiple searches have take place in Roscrea area by Gardai this month, in their efforts to target the sale and supply of drugs, initiated in response to a heightened level of community engagement in the area.
Details of Garda activity in this area are as follows:
June 10th 2020: Gardaí, assisted by the Garda Dog Unit, executed a search warrant at a house on Carroll’s Row, seizing cash to the value of €1,800 and crystal meth to the value of €200. During the search Gardaí also seized a weighing scales and a mobile phone. A juvenile, aged in his mid-teens was arrested and a file will be prepared for the DPP.
June 10th 2020: On the same day, yet another juvenile was haulted and searched. Same search yielded €150 of cannabis herb. The teenager will be processed under the juvenile diversion programme.
June 17th 2020: Cash to the value of €1,450 and cannabis herb to the value €50 was seized when a man understood to be in his 20’s was searched on the Old Dublin Road in the town. He also was arrested and later released with a file to be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
On December 20th 2019, a large seizure took place at Gleann Glas, Roscrea, Co. Tipperary, when €4,000 worth of cocaine was seized during a similar planned search operation. Back then a local man in his 30’s was arrested at the scene.
We understand that up to 14 people have been arrested (1 woman and 13 men) with all remaining in Garda custody, as part of ‘Operation Coronation’, latter initially set up to target Co. Limerick’s feuding criminal gangs, one of which is centred on the King’s Island area of the city. This criminal gang are known to have interests and members in adjoining counties, including Tipperary, Limerick and Clare.
At 6.00am this morning, in excess of 170 Gardaí; members of the Criminal Assets Bureau; the Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau; together with members of the Defence Forces, were involved in carrying out searches on 67 properties in all three of the aforementioned counties and confirm that a substantial amount of cash in Euro, Sterling, old Irish currency and Dirham, (latter Dirham being the currency of the United Arab Emirates), Drugs, Jewelry and property have been seized.
In all, during this operation Gardaí seized the following:- Some €220,000.00 in Euros, Sterling, Dirham and old Irish currency. Deeds to a property in Dubai. One motor vehicle valued at approximately €50,000.00. €100,000 worth of jewellery and luxury watches. High value clothing items Significant evidence to support the current investigation, including financial accounts and property documentation. Suspected drugs to the value of €23,500. Two cocaine presses Two bank accounts have also been frozen, containing sums in excess of €119,000.
The Irish Army Search Engineers, the Army Bomb Disposal Team and an army helicopter have been also involved.
This mornings operation forms part of the Limerick Divisional crime strategy and is a central plank of the Divisional Policing Plan, in the targeting of organised crime.
Some 5 hours ago, Gardaí have announced that they have arrested a second male, in relation to the seizure €60,000 of cocaine at an outdoor location, between the hamlets of Mullinahone and Ballingarry, in Co. Tipperary, (View initial story Here) on May 11, 2020.
As part of the investigation Gardaí from Clonmel executed a search warrant this morning June 11th, on a house in Drangan, Co Tipperary and arrested a man, aged in his 20s.
We further understand from Gardaí, that during their search they seized a small amount of cocaine and a weighing scales.
