Cloughjordan in County Tipperary is celebrating after its Community Development Association was named Ireland’s Greenest Town or Village for 2026.
The award recognises the work of the Cloughjordan Community Development Association rather than the village’s well-known ecovillage, highlighting the dedication of local volunteers to environmental protection, sustainability and community development.
The association works closely with Tidy Towns volunteers, local heritage groups, community employment scheme participants and organisations including Coillte and the National Parks and Wildlife Service.
Its achievements include supporting biodiversity projects, developing woodland walking trails and helping to restore Scohaboy Bog.
Judges praised the dedication of volunteers and the positive impact their work has had on both the local environment and the wider community.
Following the award, association chairperson Mr Gearóid Ó Foighil highlighted the importance of involving younger generations in community projects to ensure that the progress made in Cloughjordan continues into the future.
He emphasised the need to build on the achievements of existing volunteers and encourage more young people to play an active role in protecting and improving their community.
Meanwhile, The Circular Square in Clonmel also earned national recognition after being shortlisted for Ireland’s Greenest Community award.
The awards form part of the Ireland’s Greenest Places 2026 competition, organised by The Irish Times in association with Electric Ireland.
