Man Charged In Tipperary With Serious Assault On His Father

A 21-year-old male, named in Carrick-on-Suir district court, Co Tipperary this morning as Mr Stephen Butler; has been charged with assault causing serious harm to his father, in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Mr Butler, who holds an address at Ramsgrange, New Ross, Co Wexford, was charged with assault, (under Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Persons Act), to his father 48-year-old Mr John Butler, latter who was found with fatal head injuries in his residence at Brown Street, Portlaw, Co Waterford, yesterday.

The convened court heard evidence of arrest, charge and caution this morning, by Garda Ms Sharon Ryan of Tramore Garda Station, who stated Mr Butler made no reply when cautioned.

Mr Judge Terence Finn, present, was informed that the State would be objecting to any bail application, on the basis of the seriousness of the charge and the very likelihood of a more serious charge being lodged.

Seeking an adjournment until Thursday, January 16th next; Solicitor Mr Ken Cunningham informed the court that he would not be making an application for bail today.

Granting an application for free legal aid, Mr Justice Finn remanded Mr Butler in custody to appear again before Carrick-on-Suir district court on January 16th, next.
