Tipperary Roads Claim New Victim

gardaA  male, aged in his sixties, has died following a single-vehicle crash in Co Tipperary this afternoon. The accident occurred on the R687 at Newtown, New Inn, Cashel, at approximately 2.45pm this afternoon.

Gardaí confirm that the victim was fatally injured when the car, driven by himself, left the road, entered a ditch, before eventually colliding with a tree trunk. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene and his body has now been removed to South Tipperary General Hospital, Clonmel, where a post mortem is expected to take place.

Another 35-year-old male passenger, accompanying the driver in the vehicle, was taken to South Tipperary General Hospital, Clonmel, where his injuries this afternoon were described as being non-life threatening.

The road was closed for some time to facilitate Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to contact Cahir Garda Station on Tel: 052 7445630, or the Garda Confidential Line Tel: 1800 666 111 – or indeed any Garda Station.

New Charges Against Seven Accused Of Terrorising Tipp Family

New charges have been filed against seven men, latter accused of terrorising a family during an aggravated burglary at the home of Mr Mark and Mrs Emma Corcoran at Burnchurch, Killenaule, Co Tipperary, on November 21st of last year. The Corcoran’s three daughters were in the house at the time of the incident and were recorded screaming on a 999 call made from the family home.

CorcoranThe seven men accused all appeared at Cashel Courthouse here in Co Tipperary yesterday in front of Judge Terence Finn, in relation to the first original charges of aggravated burglary.

The accused, who are all from Dublin city, were also been charged with false imprisonment of Mr Mark Corcoran during the incident; the possession of a handgun and a shotgun for the purposes of committing aggravated burglary; stealing a Subaru car on the night of the burglary in Castlecomer, Co Kilkenny and stealing the Corcoran’s Kia Sorrento family car.

During that incident Mr Corcoran was assaulted and suffered a fractured eye socket and a broken nose.   The seven men accused were later arrested by Gardaí, after fleeing in two vehicles, including the car owned by the family.

All accused were in custody last night after those who had been granted bail last year; namely Patrick Joyce, Michael McDonagh and Donal O’Hara, were refused further bail in relation to the new charges.

The men charged with the offences were; John Joyce aged 19, The Donaghies, Donaghmede, Dublin; Patrick Joyce aged 21, Beaumont Hall, Beaumont Woods, Dublin 9; Michael McDonagh aged 22, Tara Lawns, Belcamp Lane, Coolock, Dublin 17; Thomas Flynn aged19, Moatview Avenue, Coolock, Dublin 17; Donal O’Hara aged 21, Glin Park, Coolock, Dublin 17; Dean Byrne aged 21 of Cabra Park, Dublin 7  and Patrick Gately aged 26 of Primrose Grove, Darndale, Dublin 17.

The case has now been adjourned to Cashel District Court for next Wednesday, March 19th.

Garda crackdown promised over the St Patricks Bank Holiday weekend

Warning: On other Garda matters, please be warned Tipperary Gardaí will be out and about clamping down on drunk and those driving dangerously over this Saint Patrick’s weekend. People planning to spend the coming weekend celebrating our Patron Saint are being reminded to leave the “wheels” behind and walk or organise a safe lift.

So in the words of Sergeant Phil Esterhaus in the once great TV American serial police drama “Hill Street Blues”- “Hey let’s be careful out there.”

Tragic Car Accident at Two-Mile-Borris Thurles Tipperary

garda crest It is with deepest sympathy we report that a woman has died following a car crash near Two-Mile-Borris here in Co Tipperary.

The elderly woman, also the driver of the vehicle, died when her car struck a fence, at about 2.00pm this afternoon, between Two-Mile-Borris and the turn off for the M8 at Thurles.

A passenger also in the car was injured, though her injuries are thought not to be life threatening. Both occupiers of the vehicle have been identified as currently resident in Thurles, however names are being withheld at this time until relatives have been properly contacted.

The body of the deceased woman has been removed from the scene and taken to University Hospital Limerick and Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to contact Thurles Garda Station on Tel: 0504-25100, or the  Garda Confidential Telephone Line on 1800-666-111 or report to any garda station.

Today’s fatality brings to five the number of people who have died on Tipperary’s roads so far since January 1st 2014.

Temporary Road Closures On Outskirts Of Thurles

ntccExpect temporary road closures on the L4105-14 from Shanbally Cross to Moycarkey and the R659 from Padre Pio Nursing Home to the Yellow Lough in Co Tipperary between March and May next.

To this end ‘Notices’ have been given by North Tipperary County Council under the Roads Act 1993 – 2007 (Section 75 Of The Roads Act 1993) Roads Regulations 1994.

According to North Tipperary County Council these road closures are expected to begin on March 3rd 2014, reopening again on May 2nd 2014 (both dates inclusive).

Alternative Routes: Diversion for the L4104-14 will be via Horse and Jockey, i.e. R639, N62 and L4106 and vice versa. Diversion for the R659 via Holycross and Thurles, i.e. R660, Butler Avenue and R659 and vice versa.

The purpose of these closures are to facilitate the installation of new watermains. Diversions are expected be in place and clearly signposted.

Nineteen Year Old Tipperary Man Dies In Road Accident

garda crestIt is with deepest regret that we learn of the death, this morning, of a young 19 year old man, who has lost his life following yet another road traffic accident on Tipperary roads.

The accident happened here in Co Tipperary this morning on the Fethard/Killenaule road, on the Fethard side of Coolmore shortly before 9.00 o’clock. It is understood that the car which the man was driving struck a fallen tree.

No other vehicle is believed to have been involved in the crash and the man, who is understood to be from the area, was the only occupant of the car.  The victims body has now been removed to Waterford General Hospital where a post mortem examination will be carried out.

This is now the fourth fatality on Tipperary’s roads since the start of 2014.
Emergency services remain at the scene and the road is not expected to open until this afternoon.

Meanwhile Met Éireann, via an Orange Alert, are warning road users of more severe flooding, high winds and heavy rains for today.
