Thurles Credit Union Sponsor People Of The Year Award

Thurles Credit Union will once again sponsorship the annual People of the Year Awards in Thurles this year.

Announcing the final details of the event at a special meeting at Credit Union House, Parnell Street, Mrs.Nancy Tynan, a member of the organising committee, stated:

TCU” Thurles Credit Union have been very pleased with the success of this event in previous years and it has now been firmly fixed in the Credit Union’s calendar of events. The aim of the award is to highlight and formally recognise people in the community who work voluntarily on behalf of their neighbours and friends. The Credit Union is very much dependent on the input of volunteers and we would be very conscious, therefore, of the marvellous work done by people across a whole range of community endeavours.”

Mr. Frank Connolly, chairman of Thurles Credit union stated:

“We are seeking nominees who would represent a broad spectrum of community activities, ranging from charitable, sporting, social, youth and community work.  The final selection of award recipients will be made by an independent adjudication panel and the successful nominees, and their guests, would be honoured at a special function and at a date as yet to be selected sometime in November of this year. Each year, we receive nominations for the unsung heroes of our community, all doing sterling work without making any headlines and we are confident that this year will be no different”.

Mr. Michael Roche, a member of the organising committee, stated:

“It was now more important than ever to encourage community activities, and Thurles Credit Union is very conscious of the input into the broader community by volunteers. Volunteerism is very much under threat at present from a number of different fronts, not least from the current dire financial straits of many clubs and local bodies. It is to encourage this aspect of community life that the awards were originally instituted and Thurles Credit Union was pleased to be in a position to continue their support of the scheme and to highlight the contributions of dedicated individuals and groups. He encouraged all local clubs and organisations to nominate those among them who deserve to have their work commended publicly.”

Nominations may be made on entry forms available in Credit Union House, Parnell Street, and in the credit union offices in Killenaule and Urlingford.

Credit Union Committee member Mr. Tom Noone paid a special tribute to the organising committee and to the adjudicators for their work and he also thanked the staff of “The Tipperary Star” newspaper for their continued invaluable assistance and support of this event, over the past number of year.
