Thurles Club For Dancing

Learn the basic steps of social dancing in The Premier Ballroom, Thurles. Learn to dance for weddings and socials, for that couples night out, for single men and women, or just for the fun and that extra weight reducing exercise.

This new six weeks course of popular dance lessons will commence again on Tuesday 24th January next, at 8.30pm sharp, concluding at 10.00pm. The course is being organised by ‘The Club for Dancing,’ and costs a total of just €20 for the six weeks.

Learn the basic steps of the Foxtrot, Waltz and Quickstep, as well as some other novelty dances. Dancing is one of the best forms of exercise, an excellent social activity and tremendous value for money.

Santa Claus Is Coming To Thurles Christmas Market

Had lunch with Nikki Veasey from Cottage Rescue Animal Shelter yesterday and got the full news update on this years Thurles Christmas Market, which will take place on Sunday 11th December here in Liberty Square, Thurles, beginning at 1.00pm and finishing at 6.00pm.

So first lets look at the entertainment being organised:-

Kids be good, Santa confirms he will visit Thurles Dec 11th next.

Of course her most exciting news is the letter she just received from Santa Claus, who confirms he will be arriving in Liberty Square, Thurles, sharp at 1.45pm. As you know, it is customary for Santa to make unannounced early Christmas visits to certain areas in early December. His reasons, well what else, but to check on who is being naughty and who is being nice. So, Mum and Dad, show this to your children before December 11th, otherwise they may find empty stockings, when he makes his annual final visit on Christmas Eve next, to Thurles and surrounding areas. ( I have it on good authority that Santa is coming down hard on children this year, who won’t go to bed on time, so be warned.)

Three highly entertaining music groups have already been guaranteed a visit from Santa this year and they will be in Liberty Square to entertain the thousands of shoppers expected into the town centre on that afternoon.

No local Christmas Market could be held in Thurles without our first two performing groups. Beginning at 1.00pm the Littleton Ramblers go on stage and at 2.00pm, they are quickly followed by those wonderful voices, yes the magnificent Thurles Gospel Choir.

At 3.00pm sharp, meet the top billing, (Warning, do not be late) as Autonomous i take to the stage, fresh from giggs in top music venues, such as ‘Whelans,’ ‘The Sugar Club,’ and ‘The Crane Lane,’ and of course their recent much publicised appearance on the successful TV series “The Apprentice.” This band was described recently by Mail on Sunday music critic Danny McElhinney as being “The best undiscovered band in Ireland.” Trust me when I say “Expect a live show which will be varied in the extreme, as they seamlessly navigates through rock, funk, dance inspired grooves, while displaying infectious confidence and cheeky pre Christmas grins, and yes for the first time in an open air concert in the centre of their beloved home town of Thurles.”

From 2.30pm -3.30pm Hayes Hotel are opening the doors of their “Factory” night club, for a free junior disco for children, aged strictly between 4 years and 13 years. Parental Note Here: Children can only be admitted if accompanied by at least one parent. Santa will be of course visiting here during this event also. So Mum here is a chance for you to sneak away and have a walk around the town without anyone, dare I say “hanging out of you.”

Note the Market area will be devoid of moving traffic, Christmas lighting will be switched on and everyone can enjoy and visit the assembled over 60 stalls on the street and of course local shops in the town centre and surrounding streets, all of which will be open for business and doing special cut price offers on that day.

“Speaking of market stalls, what’s on offer,” I hear you scream. On the day there will be ‘a sea of shopping variety,’ never before witnessed in any rural town in Ireland, all major food manufacturing artisans will be in attendance offering goods and advise. There will be hand craft demonstrations like wood turning and slate mirror making, jewelry, cosmetics, knitting, garden furniture, face painting, toys, soft ice-cream manufacturing, vintage vehicles, a vintage museum, kiddy rides, etc, etc, etc.

Just in case you can’t find what you are looking for, our town’s much loved, quick witted, and golden voiced “Town Crier,” Mr Tomas Noone will be on hand, with microphone at the ready, to inform you of what is ready and available in the local shops and on the visiting stalls.

TippFM Is Down Your Way In Thurles

One of TippFM Radio‘s weekly specialist programmes “Down Your Way,” with popular local host Eamon O’Dwyer, will feature Thurles and it’s environs tonight (Thursday).

The popular weekly local radio show, which goes out every Thursday evening at 7.00pm will feature among it’s guests this week, Fr Gerry Kelly, Michelle Heaney and George Willoughby.

Among the topics for discussion are Hidden Tipperary, the Thrashing Festival in Dualla and Chinese Medicine.

Incidentally, note by 10.00 am, each morning, TippFM has a massive 59% of Tipperary people as their audience or over 83,000 people tuned in to listen to their daily programmes each week.

North Tipperary Agricultural Show 2011

Nenagh Agri-Show

A large turnout is expected to turn out for the 2011 North Tipperary Agricultural Show taking place in Nenagh this August Bank Holiday Monday. (August 1st 2011)

Nenagh Co Tipperary grew and continues to flourished as an agricultural market town, and its Irish name means “The Fair of Ormond,” a reference to the old East Munster Ormond Agricultural Fairs, of which it was historically the site.

In its 134th year this popular annual show, promises be one of the biggest yet, with side shows which include paint-balling target competitions and a bucking bronco, aside from the many normally expected core animal attractions held at the Borrisokane Road, Showgrounds.

This annual event in North Tipperary, is renowned for being the counties showcase to a large variety of sheep, cattle, and poultry classes.

Comb the hair and wear your best frock, as UTV camera’s will also be present this year making a documentary on the art of cattle judging, focusing on local expert livestock judge David Wilson.

The show will also include craft work, expect to find exotic floral displays, quality baking and cooking demonstrations, needlework, art, photography and of course the much prized fruit and vegetable produce on display.

Overall family entertainment will be at a premium, with a pet farm on site inhabited by hares, rabbits, snakes, owls, hedgehogs, and even a vulture or two thrown in for good measure.

Other displays at this event will include trade stands selling and displaying their local crafts, a farmer’s market, and an equine store. Keep an eye out also for dog shows, Cossack horse riding, boxing displays, martial arts, horse and pony classes and show-jumping.

To be honest you do not have to come from a farming background be enjoy this event, but good cheap family fun for all, is truly guaranteed.

A Tipperary native now resident in Australia, Katie O.Connell-Knott, is looking for a ‘Tipperary Tourism Slogan,‘ to put on T-Shirts for her next Irish Expats Barbecue.

Katie, a regular visitor and commenter on Thurles.Info and our new tourism site Hidden Tipperary, is looking for a slogan, which will promote Irish Tourism in Australia.

To assist Katie in her quest, we here on Thurles.Info and Hidden Tipperary are putting up a prize for the best T-Shirt slogan received.

AIMS 2011 Results

June each year, ‘Come hell or high water,’ dozens of Ireland’s top musical societies make their annual pilgrimage down to the capital of the Kerry kingdom, to Killarney, to the highly coveted Association of Irish Musical Societies awards (AIMS). Why not, afterall this event is the Oscars of Irish Amateur Musical theatre, embracing the thirty two counties of this green and present land.

This year was to be no different, with winners of the AIMS/HB awards being announced on Saturday last, June 18th, in the Gleneagle Hotel, with some nine hundred amateur performers waiting eagerly in attendance.

As ever, Tipperary’s most talented thespians held their own and came up trumps at this years, 2011, award ceremony. Thurles Musical Society, St. Mary’s Choral Society Clonmel and Nenagh Choral Society, were among the top nominees on the night, with a further strong Tipperary representation spread out among the bevy of other worthy societies.

Clonmel and Nenagh scored individual wins on the night, with former AIMS winners Thurles Musical Society just very unlucky not to come away with a win for their much deserved “Best Visual,” and “Best Stage Management,” nominations.

Spring Awakening-2011 AIMS adjudicated 'Best Show.'

The night however belonged to Tralee Musical Society and Dublin’s new National Youth Musical Theatre-Ireland, both winning ‘Best Overall Show,’ in their respective categories for the musicals “Michael Collins,” and “Spring Awakening.”

This best show victory for “Spring Awakening,” in the Sullivan Section, is the latter’s second such win, since last September, having already won the International Festival of Light Opera in Waterford, just last November.

Particular congratulations must go out to Tipperary native Spring Awakening cast members Ed Leamy (Roscrea), Shane Willoughby (Thurles) and Chris Britton (Clonmel). You’ve done your local Musical Societies in this Premier County very proud folks.

Congratulations to everyone involved with AIMS 2011, and here’s to another fantastic year of musical theatrics.

Mick Hanly Live At Kilcooley Church Tipperary

Singer Mick Hanley

Singer, songwriter, Mick Hanly, is presently touring Tipperary following his latest album release, “Live at the Set,” and will be performing live at Kilcooley Parish Church, Gortnahoe, Thurles on Friday night next.

His latest album was recorded with band and guests at The Set Theatre, Kilkenny last May. It features guest appearances by Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill, Christy Moore, and Mary Black. The album finds Hanly in top form vocally and performing a selection of his very finest songs. A DVD of the concert will be released later this year.

Mick has been around the block more times than most and has tried on a variety of hats in search of his own voice. Starting his career on the Folk circuit in the seventies he made a couple of folk albums for the Mulligan label, before turning his hand to song writing and fronting Moving Hearts for a spell in the early eighties.

He briefly donned a Stetson and formed his own band, Rusty Old Halo, leaving one album with Warner’s called Still Not Cured. After a series of album for the now defunct Round Tower label, Hanly established his own song writing style, which he has been honing to exceptional effect since.

He had a major hit with his song ‘Past the Point of Rescue,’ Stateside in 1992 and picked up three BMI awards, most recently for passing the ‘Two Million Radio Plays,’ target. He also has two Hot Press, and two National Entertainment awards.

His songs have been recorded by artists Hal Ketchum, Mary Black, Delbert McClinton, Dolores Keane, Christy Moore, etc.
So make a date to hear Mick live at Kilcooley Parish Church near Gortnahoe, here in Co Tipperary this coming Friday May 27th @ 8.30pm.

Stars of our Bars County Final-The Ragg

The Vintners’ Federation of Ireland (VFI) in association with Smithwick’s, will host the County Final of “Stars of Our Bars” in The Ragg, this coming Friday .

Since January last, thousands of hopefuls will have the chance to showcase their talents in the “Stars of our Bars” pub talent competition, which took place in pubs and bars across the country.

But possibly few of our Licenced Hostelry’s have been as successful as Skehan’s Bar here at 190 Liberty Square, Thurles, who boast two contestants through to the County Finals. These two contenders are well known local soloist Ann Commins and new kids on the block, the band “Thicker Than Water.” So get out there and give them your loudest support.

Proprietor of the well known historical ‘Skehans Bar,’ Pat Lineen, would not be drawn to-night on who his money was on, to win the final, but stated that judges would have major difficulty in deciding between both performers.

“Stars of our Bars” competitors are each in with a chance to win from a cash prize fund of some €50,000 and to be crowned “Smithwick’s Stars of our Bars” Champion 2011.

Thurles Got Talent Competition

Has Thurles Got Talent?

After the huge success of last year, Thurles Community Association and Tipperary Regional Youth Service are again hosting a “Thurles Got Talent” Competition as part of their annual Fun Day.

They are looking for young people between the ages of 8-18 years who have a talent and who fancy winning a cash prize of €200.
Your talent could be singing, dancing, acting, juggling etc, etc, etc.

Auditions: Auditions will be held the week of the June 20th next.

The final of the “Thurles Got Talent” Competition will then be held in the Source Arts Centre, Thurles on Friday July 1st at 8pm.

Application Forms: These can be obtained by phoning Sara Leahy in the Tipperary Regional Youth Service Office, Croke St, Tel: 0504 23426/ 087 6210666 or from the Source Arts Centre.

Entry Cost: Entry is free
