It is with great sadness we learned of the death of Thurles Sarsfields GAA Club’s Honorary President and Tipperary hurling legend Mickey (The Rattler) Byrne, who has passed away peacefully at his home in Thurles, this morning, aged 93.
His passing this morning; on the very day of the 2016 County Senior Hurling Final; in which his club is participating at 3:30pm in Semple Stadium, is particularly emotional and heart rending.
Mickey Rattler Byrne was the winner of fourteen GAA County Senior Hurling Championships with his beloved Sarsfields Club, together with five GAA All-Ireland Senior Hurling Medals with the Tipperary Senior County Team.
His sudden passing will most certainly occasion a dark cloud over today’s proceedings, as well as a great sadness in the hearts and minds of all people in Co. Tipperary and much further afield.
Full funeral details will be announced later.
