Pipe Bombs And Hand Gun Found In Tipperary

One man is due before Thurles District Court later today, following the discovery of four pipe bombs, a handgun, ammunition and some stolen property, near Tipperary town last night.

Seven other men arrested at the same time are due to appear before Tipperary District Court next Wednesday.

Detectives for some time have been focusing on individuals in Tipperary town and Thurles, who are believed to be involved in drugs distribution and organised crime and this discovery follows a planned on-going Garda operation, code named ‘Operation Infinity’.

Fifteen searches of houses and flats took place as part of this Garda crackdown. The eight, all males, ranging in age from their early twenties to mid thirties were arrested and detained at Tipperary and Thurles Garda stations under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

The Army Bomb Disposal Squad were called to the scene to ensure the safety of the explosive devices and one device was taken away for further technical examination.

These devices are understood to have been found in a lane-way, near Lacken, on the Bansha side of Tipperary town and are not believed to have been for use locally. The explosives were possibly being stored for future use by feuding gangs in cities Dublin and Limerick.
